Introduction

This chapter discusses the background of the study, statement of the problem and justification in relation to the assessment of psychosocial hazards among health care workers in mental health institution and the interventions thereof.

Background of the study

It is key that psychiatric hospitals understand the policies and practical aspect of safety, which is key in prevention of psychosocial hazards (Casey, Griffin, Flatau, Harrison, and Neal, 2017). ). Psychosocial hazards are well defined as the association between the job, organization as well as administration, within a specific environment and managerial circumstances (International Labour Organization (ILO), 1986).  Psychological hazards comprise of hazardous occupational experiences such as extreme workloads, being given too much responsibility, experiencing disrespect, when bullied by coworkers, supervisors, or managers, limited support on staff members, extended working hours and mismanaged work shifts. These in combination or independently accelerate psychological hazards. Sources of psychological hazards include among others work organizational factors, workplace violence, harassment, working alone, Organisational change, technological change, fatigue and hours of work, depression, anxiety (O’Connor, 2019). Psychological hazards that can negatively affect the health and safety of workers and these entail among others work-related anxiety, on-the-job oppression, job-related violence, and occupational exhaustion.

Psychological hazards, amongst others directly affect employees and organizations, globally (Chirico, Heponiemi, Pavlova, Zaffina, and Magnavita, 2019). For example, the proportion of psychological hazards in mental institutions in Botswana has been found to be relatively high, especially amongst nurses (Olashore, Akanni, and Ogundipe, 2018). The common psychological hazards include among others an increased workload, extremely difficult work, exhaustion (both emotional and somatic), and stress commonly occurring in hospitals (Sadlier, 2008).  Exposure to psychosocial hazards causes exhaustion (Shimizu, Makino, and Takata, 1997), drowsiness, wretchedness and struggles with concentrating (Deblinger, Mcleer, Atkins, Ralphe, and Foa, 1989). ). Koller (1996) indicated that night shifts, negatively affects the entire human livelihood, thereby accelerating stress. In addition, it contributes to obstructions, low self-esteem and reduced job fulfilment (Schmieder and Smith, 1996).
