Imagine you are asleep researcher conducting a trial of a new drug to aid sleep. Your clinical trial enrolls 20 patients, 10 randomly chosen to receive the new drug, the other 10 to receive a placebo (control). Each patient records a number of hours slept every night for two weeks before beginning the trial, and then for two weeks during the trial. For each patient, you record the difference between the mean number of hours slept after the trial began and the mean number of hours slept before the trial. These data are in the datafile sleep.txt on D2L. Conduct a two-sample t-test to determine whether the new drug enhances sleep. Check the assumptions of normality and homoscedasticity both graphically, and with formal statistical tests.
