Assignment Task:

Task:

If you were conducting a study on victimization by urban gangs in a specific neighbourhood in Ottawa, what sources of data could you use to develop a multifaceted understanding of the problem? Based on research material in our lesson on research methods, describe four types of data you would use, the strengths and weakness of each type and provide a specific example of what you might want to learn from each source of data to better understand the youth gang problem in the neighbourhood you are studying.
https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/85-002-x/index-eng.htm juristat Canada site from which you have to collect the data.

The four type of data you have to use are:
1.Police Statistics
2. Victimization Surveys
3. Self-Report Surveys
4. Institutional Data

I will also provide notes from where you can see the theory which should be involved.

INTRODUCTION
The scientific discipline of victimology requires specific tools for exploring the phenomenon of victimization. This lesson explores the important data sources used to gain information about victimization, considering their strengths and weaknesses.
LESSON OUTCOMES
By the end of this lesson you should be able to:
1. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of different sources of victimization data
2. Integrate data sources to investigate victimization
3. Consider the ethical implications of conducting research
4. Apply Andrew Karmen’s investigative method of victimology

SCIENTIFIC VICTIMOLOGY
As a scientific discipline, victimology endeavours to explore the phenomenon of victimization in an objective manner. This lesson is not intended to cover a full breadth of research methods, but to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of various data sources that are used in research on victimization. In addition to the methods discussed here, researchers may use standard methods of quantitative inquiry such as topical questionnaires and statistical interpretations of data; or they may use qualitative methods such as content analysis of media sources, documentary analysis, interviews, participant observation, or other forms of ethnography.
In this lesson, we will examine four sources of data that can be used to research victimization:
1. Police Statistics
2. Victimization Surveys
3. Self-Report Surveys
4. Institutional Data

POLICE STATISTICS
One of the most common and most relied upon sources of information about criminal offending in Canada is data gathered by the police through Uniform Crime Reports (UCR). Introduced in 1962 by the government of Canada, the Uniform Crime Reports were a standardized reporting mechanism used by every province and territory to record criminal offences. This statistical tool allowed researchers to develop crime rates and to compare patterns in criminal offending from one jurisdiction to another. The UCR was used to record all reported or detected violations of the criminal code (does not include traffic offences).
