VET656 Public Health and Epidemiology Critical Appraisal of Emerging Public Health Challenges Nursing Review Critique Writing Assessment Answer
Assessment Task:

A critical review in epidemiology and public health evaluates the clarity, quality and originality of research, as well as its relevance and presentation. A good review carefully analyses an article's strengths and weaknesses - remember that no observational study is perfect – and then assess its overall value. Writing a critical review is a useful academic exercise that helps to improve basic epidemiological skills. By assessing the work of others, you will become familiar with specific evaluation criteria for public health research and develop critical thinking skills that has a more general application. Critiquing other scientific research will help you to develop good writing skills which will be essential for you in the future. The learning outcomes from of this assessment are to: 1. efficiently and critically review and interpret the scientific literature in public health 2. apply principles of epidemiology when evaluating research

Written Critique –

What is the structure of a written critique? Please follow the reporting guidelines relevant to the research paper you have chosen (available via EQUATOR). A written critique starts with a brief introduction to the article, then goes on to answer the following questions:

• Is the method of selecting the sample, cases and controls clearly described?

• Are other details such as numbers, time periods, statistical tests used clearly described and consistent?

• If relevant, have examiners or enumerators been trained and calibrated?

• If questionnaires and pro forma have been used, have they been tested, are they relevant to the study and are they presented either as figures in the paper, in an appendix or via a link?

• Are there any missing data and if so are they accounted for (e.g. lost-to-followup, nonresponders)?

• Are the numbers, percentages, statistical values accurate and clear?

• If statistical tests have been used, are they appropriate?

• If statistical tests have not been used, can this be justified?

• Is the sample large enough to justify the findings?

• Are the findings clinically significant (not just statistically significant)?

• Are the results believable?
