UTS2702: Philosophy and IOT Storytelling and Data Visualization IOT and Big Data Assignment Help
Assignment Task: UTC2708:

Question 1: Philosophy and IoT
In class, we have mentioned privacy, the ubiquitous nature of IoT and Data – how they have become so pervasive in our worlds. Sometimes we need to take a step back and philosophize about where this is headed.

Kenneth Taylor in his article says the following

Start with the vast number and variety of things that will be involved in the internet of things. We’re not talking about just the usual suspects like computers, smartphones and, lately, watches. It goes way beyond that. It’s cars... refrigerators... potentially every system or appliance in every building in the world. And then there are roads, bridges, train tracks. And monitors of every sort... heart monitors, sleep monitors, baby monitors. And we’re not just talking about passively hooking them up to the internet, we’re also talking about making each of these new things on the internet smart. Soon there will be billions of interconnected smart devices, collecting and analyzing reams and reams of data, autonomously sharing it, all without any human intervention. Think of America’s crumbling infrastructure. Imagine smart bridges that constantly monitor their own state and automatically alert the transportation department when they need repair and maybe shut themselves down and spontaneously reroute traffic while they are waiting for the repair crews to arrive. It's almost as if the roadway system itself will be a living, thinking thing. That’s the upside. But there’s a downside. The deeper question lurking just beneath the surface here is about who will own and control all this information. You can bet it won’t be the individual consumer! It’s much more likely to be private corporations. In a way, we have already crossed that Rubicon. Huge corporations already track just about every click we make on the current internet. And though that hasn’t caused people to completely abandon the internet, it has played an important role in the growth of the dark web that lies mostly beyond the reach of prying eyes. This raises the possibility that by expanding the reach of prying eyes, by pushing traditional cyberspace out into physical space more and more, the internet of things will drive more and more people underground. Do we really want that? Bad things happen, I am told, on the dark web.

Your Task: UTS2702
You need to opine on this – decide (1) if you think the “Pros” of IOT far outweigh the “Cons” of IoT or vice versa and (2) state why you believe so, backed up with facts, justification - using specific examples and as much detail as you can, including graphics/pictures if needed to
ensure that the reader gets a complete picture.

Question 2: Storytelling & Data Visualization
As discussed in class, while it is essential to have good visualization, being a good “storyteller” is equally if not more important. In an article, Chiara Migotto discusses 5 key questions to ask yourself in terms of good data visualization She indicates that “Storytelling” is a key part of the process.

Storytelling is crucial and allows you to focus and tune your audience’s attention on what is not being heard yet. In simple words, a story helps you focus your audience’s attention to a signal as opposed to just responding to a noise. Everyone loves good stories. Telling a story helps your audience learn and absorb new information faster. The story of your dashboard is the communication of your primary objective and key points. Ensure that your dashboard tells only a single story and your public get the main message. Each visualisation of a dashboard should support the overall story and not communicate different messages. Story is about learning by inquiring! In a good story, everyone becomes a protagonist. You will be showing multiple perspectives of the same aspect. Your perspective might be different from that of your audience. A great dashboard will guide your audience to ask specific questions, getting the right insight and answers.

Your Task: UTC2708
Go search the web for different forms of data visualizations in relation to “Smart Cities”. Find ONE story, which in your opinion, tells the “BEST” Story and why you believe this is the case.

Question 3: Future of Retail - A World of “Amazon Go” stores

Your Task :
Provide your opinion on the use of such sensor-driven technologies for “making life easier”. Expand your horizons beyond the grocery store – applying it to all sorts of new
applications – retail, travel and so on.n What are we losing or gaining by such an “automated” life? Pick a side – the positives and negatives and provide your opinion. Illustrate your view with as many examples as you can.
