Assignment Task

Literature review on use of different types of membrane or membrane systems for wastewater treatment in the Oil and Gas Industry

The main objective for this literature review will be looking into the use of membrane technology for oil field and refinery produced water treatment. Membranes have been generally used for applications like desalination, potable water production, treating industrial effluents and water reclamation and reuse.
Wastewater treatment is growing to be a worldwide concern and it is important to address the significance of oil and gas production processes in large volumes of wastewater produced.

This report is based focused on the use of membrane technology and its use in the Oil and Gas industry. The report will start with the basic background of membrane technology and its usage over the years. Then, it will highlight its advantages and disadvantages over the conventional methods such as  using physical separation methods followed by its discharge to the environment as well as discuss other methods. What are the conventional methods?
which are being used in the industry. The historical development of membrane technology, analysis of different composition of wastewater and related environmental impacts. Then, this report will focus on understanding the different membrane technologies and evaluating their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, in depth discussion of membrane materials, module configuration and how these factors impact the overall performance will be discussed, along with main drawbacks of membrane technology which needs improvement such as fouling.

Scope:
The general scope of this report is to introduce the use of membrane technology in the treatment of wastewater in the Oil and Gas Industry. Different aspects of membrane technology will be discussed to show that membrane technology is more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly as compared to other conventional methods. Write scope after the report, the scope is to collect related information and developing of recommendations

Background:
Water is used significantly in oil and gas production processes making it very important to address the need of cost effectivecost-effective water management in order to deal with large volumes of wastewater produced in a sustainable manner. Membrane technology is emerging as a key process in the technology toolbox needed to develop an effective water reuse.

During the extraction process, deep drilling techniques are used to extract shale oil and gas to recover hydrocarbon energy sources (Munirasu, Haija, & Banat, 2016). In this process, water is also extracted which is called produced water, PW. The PW is the fresh water that comes out from the formation throughout the drilling process. The water is used for the pressurization plus pumping out of oil, and gas from the well sites (Munirasu et al., 2016). As compared to the Gas site PW, the volume of PW in the Oil site is much higher. It means that more water is required to extract the oil as compared to the gas. In some oil sites, the volume of PW can be as high as 98% of the total fluid volume(Alzahrani & Mohammad, 2014; Igunnu & Chen, 2014; Munirasu et al., 2016). Normally, the ratio of oil and water is 1:3 for almost every oil well(Munirasu et al., 2016). The water which comes out during the drilling process is part of the existing forms of water present within or beneath the oil or gas reservoir. It means that the produced water is composed of natural geological formation which is mostly acidic and has various soluble minerals(Munirasu et al., 2016)
