Imagine that you have been appointed as a management trainee under a Human Resource Department in a manufacturing company. The students have to relate to a manufacturing company they know.

The Human Resources (HR) department will be restructured based on the findings of a review report, which you have submitted. You are to review the effectiveness of the HR function within the organization, researching the role and scope of HR and reviewing and assessing the main HR functions within the organization. This has to be submitted as a case study report.

  • LO1 Explain the purpose and scope of Human Resource Management in terms of resourcing an organization with talent and skills appropriate to fulfil business functions.

  • LO2 Evaluate the effectiveness of the key elements of Human Resource Management in an organization.

The case study assessment report should cover the following:

  1. Write an overview of human resource management and its importance in an organization.

  2. Write an explanation on the purpose and functions of the HRM and the key roles and responsibilities of the HR functions applicable to workforce planning and resourcing the organization.

  3. Assess how the HRM functions provide the talent and skills needed to achieve organizational goals. 

  4. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to recruitment and selection. And offer your recommendation by evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each approach supported by specific examples. 

  5. Relating to both employer and the employee within the selected organization, explain the benefits of different HRM practices with reference to specific examples. 

  6. Produce an evaluation of the effectiveness of different HRM practices in relation to profit and productivity.  

  7. Referring to an organizational context, make a critical evaluation of HRM practices using a range of specific examples. 

  8. Based on your studies on this part, provide some conclusions and recommendations for further improvement in an organization.

Part 2

Scenario 2

You have been asked to participate in the verification of the new recruitment and selection process at the Human Resources (HR) department of an organization as an intern. This part has three sections; section 1, and section 3 are individual tasks. 

Section two, you will work in a small team (3–4 members) to design a job specification for a particular job role and then you will take part in an interview simulation for a job role advertised by another team. When you produce the portfolio, you have to submit all documents individually.

  • LO3 Analyze internal and external factors that affect Human Resource Management decision-making, including employment legislation.

  • LO4 Apply Human Resource Management practices in a work-related context

 You have to produce a document portfolio which should include:

Section 1

  1. Referring to some cases, analyze the importance of employee relations in respect to influencing HRM decision making. 

  2. With reference to employment legislation, identify the key elements and its impact upon HRM which the organization must work. 

  3. Make an evaluation of the key aspects of employee relations management and employment legislation that affect HRM decision making. 

Section 2

  1. The design of a job specification for one of a number of given positions in the organization.

  2. A CV for each student, tailored to apply for one of the positions advertised by another team.

  3. Documentation of preparatory notes for interviews, interview notes based on selection criteria and a justified decision of the candidate selected.

  4. A job offer letter to the selected candidate.

Section 3

  1. With reference to the group activity, write a critical evaluation of the process and the rationale for conducting appropriate HR practices that influence decision making.
