Abstract 
This experiment explores the different types of polarisation of light and how they can be classified using linear polariser and quarter-wave plat polariser. Besides, it also investigates deeper into the circular polarisation and its application being used by certain beetle for their habitat. 
 

Introduction

In this experiment, we are going to study the polarisations of light, explore different types of polarisation, and the application of circular polarisation being used by certain beetles.  Light is a transverse electromagnetic wave that consists of an electric field and magnetic field oscillating perpendicular to each other and the direction of propagation. By convention, a polarised wave is defined by the oscillation of the electric field on a plane, and the direction of the wave is known as the direction of the polarisation of the light.

 

The wave description of light
Light is an electromagnetic wave. Individually, the components of electromagnetic waves in Cartesian coordinates satisfy the differential wave equation:

The maxwell curl equations assert that a magnetic field varying time and space is accompanied by an electric field and vice versa. These ideas coupled imply that light travels as a transverse electromagnetic wave. Furthermore, by Maxwell’s divergence equations, the electric and magnetic fields must be exclusively transverse, that is, the electric component of an electromagnetic wave traveling in the z-direction can be expressed in the form:

 

Polarisation
Linear polarisation has the electric field wave of light oscillating in a single plane along the direction of propagation [1]. A linear polariser will only allow through the electric field wave oriented parallel to its transmission axis without affecting intensity. Thus, it blocks all the electric field waves incident perpendicular to the transmission axis. Light incident at angles between can be thought of as having a vertical and horizontal component concerning the transmission axis being vertical. Only the component parallel to the transmission axis can pass through the polariser.
