TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT 2

This tutorial will be devoted to a discussion of wage labor, precarious work, and global poverty.
As preparation, you should do the following:
1) Read the article “The Future of Work is the Future of Poverty”,
2) Note down your thoughts around how work and poverty are related in today’s economic system, and any thoughts you might have on how this affects you personally.
In your tutorial, you will first discuss your thoughts around this topic in groups of five for 20 minutes, before reporting back on your discussion to the whole group. The plenary part of the exercise will be moderated by the tutorial convenors.

TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT 3
This tutorial assignment will be a marked assignment in the form of a short essay. Deadline for submission through ClickUP/TurnItIn is 13 March, 11pm (23:00 hours).
Choose ONE of the two following topics:

1) Discuss the following statement using sociological concepts and perspectives from the module readings: “Gender-base violence is linked to hegemonic masculinity.”
2) Discuss the following statement using sociological concepts and perspectives from the module readings: “Whiteness is a form of power in society.”
Your essay should be 1,000 words (plus/minus 10%). It should be typed with 1.5 line spacing, using Cambria font size 10. Please ensure that you provide references to all module readings that you cite in the essay and that you provide an alphabetical list of the readings you cite at the end of the essay. This list does not count towards the word limit.

TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT 4
In this week’s tutorial, you will once again exercise your sociological imagination. This time you will analyze arguments about post-apartheid South Africa using sociological concepts from the module readings. As preparation for the tutorial, you should do the following:
1) Read the following two articles:

- “Six Things White People Have That Black People Don’t”
- “Why I Call Myself a Coconut to Claim My Place in Post-Apartheid South
Africa”

2) Note down your thoughts on how the arguments presented in the articles can be analyzed and discussed using concepts and perspectives from your module readings.
In your tutorial, you will first discuss your thoughts around these two articles in groups of five, for 20 minutes before reporting back on your discussion to the whole group. The plenary part of the exercise will be moderated by the tutorial convenors.

TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT 5

This tutorial assignment will be a marked assignment in the form of a short essay. The deadline for submission is 8 May, 11 pm (23:00 hours).
Choose ONE of the two following topics:

1) Read the article “Why South Africa is the World’s Most Unequal Society”,

Your essay should be 1,000 words (plus/minus 10%). It should be typed with 1.5 line spacing, using Cambria font size 10.
