The overall purpose of this project is to design systems that deliver power, water, and telecommunications to remote communities using currently available technologies with an emphasis on integrating renewable energy sources. The following project groups will take charge of the sub-projects that aim to deliver essential services to a mining site:

 

Group 1: Providing power supply to a community 4 students from electrical, electronics, ICA, or mechatronics. Supervisor: Ganesh Kothapalli This team will be in charge of the design of the power system that integrates renewable energy sources into the grid. The team devises practical means of integrating various sources of renewable energy with an existing grid and deliver power supply to a remote community. Design system level implementation targeted at a prototype system that meets demand of 5 kW integrated with at least 25% renewables. Devise mechanisms to include energy storage added at the next phase of development.

 

Group 2: Potable water supply from sea/brackish water 4 students from civil or chemical engineering. Supervisor: Tushar Kanti Sen The challenge here is to provide potable water to a community of about 100 people (a typical remote mining site). Assume a reservoir is accessible and collects rain water during the winter. The rest of water is either obtained from bore wells or desalinated and hence the team needs to devise suitable treatment plant. Rooftop rainwater harvesting must be included and you need to work with other teams in this chapter to use renewable energy to build desalination plant.

 

Group 3: Telecommunication systems to remote communities 4 students from the broad field of Electrical, Electronic & Communication, or ICA. Supervisor: Ganesh Kothapalli This team will develop a prototype telecommunication system that provides telephone and internet services in remote mining communities in Western Australia. The power supply for the communications equipment needs to integrate with the renewable energy sources. High reliability of the power supply is required for the communications infrastructure
