The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate and apply their knowledge of symptoms of psychopathology, principles of clinical assessment and diagnosis, and ability to understand and apply research relating to the aetiology and treatment of psychological disorders. As well, understand physical and cultural factors involved in a case.

Instructions

For this assignment, students will be provided with a fictional case study.  Students are required to respond to a number of questions (see below) relating to assessment and diagnosis, aetiology and treatment.  Students are expected to conduct a literature search and apply this to the case study.   Information about the required information students must address under each heading is provided below.

  1. Assessment and Diagnosis

    1. Based on the available information, specify the primary DSM-5 diagnosis and relevant differential (or alternative) diagnoses (including DSM-5 codes), as well as comorbid psychosocial, and/or physical health problems that are present in the case.  Present this information using the table below (see example template below)

    2. Explain what differential diagnoses (or alternative diagnoses) were considered in making this primary diagnosis and justify using symptoms described in the case

  1. Aetiology

    1. Review and critique research evidence describing biopsychosocial factors involved in the aetiology of the primary diagnosis you have made

    2. Integrate this research with information in the case study and discuss what factors may help explain the aetiology of the disorder in this case

  2. Treatment

    1. Describe, using empirical literature, the main treatment options for the primary diagnosis you have made

    2. Present and critique evidence relating to the short- and long-term outcomes for individuals treated with these different possible treatment options

    3. Integrate this research with information from the case study and discuss which treatment option would be best in this case.  Justify this by outlining the main considerations in making this recommendation.

Requirements of the Case Study Assignment and Format

This assignment should be no more than 1500 words in length.  This word count includes in-text citations but not the reference list.   Any words exceeding 10% over the limit (i.e. 1650 words) will not be read by markers and will not contribute to your mark for the assignment.

Your Case Study Assignment should be formatted according to APA (7th edition) guidelines, including (but not limited to), headings, double spacing, citations and references.  It needs to be structured according to the headings required above, with responses to each question clear for the marker.  Ensure that the assignment is written in the third person.  Students will be marked on the case study assignment according to a marking rubric available on Canvas.  Please ensure you submit to the correct assignment dropbox.

Assignment Submission

You are required to submit the case study assignment by

Thursday 1st April 17:00pm (Class free week). You are required to submit your assignment electronically via Canvas drop box only (no hard copy submissions).

Electronic submissions must be either in Microsoft Word (.doc) or RTF (.rtf) format only.  Note, URKUND will be used in assignment submission.

You may encounter delays uploading assignments to Canvas.  Therefore, you should aim to load your applied research paper at least one hour before it is due to avoid late penalties caused by unexpected delays or problems

.

If you do not know how to submit your assignment electronically, please seek help from Canvas student support (

http://learnonline.canberra.edu.au/studentsupport.php

) or the Library services.  However, allow sufficient time when seeking assistance.

Return of Assignments

Assignments received by the due date will be returned electronically (via Canvas).  Students should receive their marked assignments approximately 3 weeks after the due date, with written feedback and a mark.  Occasionally situations may arise unexpectedly which may delay the return of assignments within this three week timeframe.  If this occurs, an announcement will be delivered via Canvas and in lectures and tutorials.  Assignments submitted after the due date (with or without an extension) will be returned at a later date than those submitted on time.  This may mean that students submitting a late assignment may not have their mark prior to the final examination period.

For further information on extensions, assignment submission and academic integrity please refer to the unit outline.
