SWK291 - Lionel Case Study Social Work Assessment Answer

Case Study

Lionel Tan, 17, was referred by his school principal, Mr Thomas Pereira to your social service agency due to Lionel’s poor relationship with his father. Lionel lives in a 3 room purchased flat with his biological father, Mr Tan Ah Kim, Alan, 50, his stepmother Mdm Lee Ai Ling, Alvi, 52 and stepbrother, Amos, aged 12.

Lionel is currently studying in year 1, Business Services in ITE. Amos is in the Integrated programme in secondary 1 in a prestigious secondary school. Mr Tan & Mdm Lee run a small stall in the market selling joss paper. Lionel shares a cordial relationship with his stepmother (Mdm Lee) and brother (Amos).

Lionel used to be close with both his parents. However, he became hostile towards his father when his parents divorced. Though Mr Tan only legally married Mdm Lee after his divorce, he had already fathered Amos before that. Amos was already 7 years old when the couple legally married.

According to the school records, Lionel was still in in contact with his biological mother, Mdm Ivy Tan till she passed away a year ago due to cervical cancer. Since then, Lionel seems to have become angrier and more aggressive towards his father. Their simple conversation flares up into major arguments. Fortunately, the two are not physically abusive towards each other. Lionel seems to blame his father for his mother’s death. He had shared with Mr Pereira that his father had cheated on his mother and divorced her. She had become very stressed and depressed over her situation and developed cancer which ultimately killed her.

Mr Tan, on the other hand feels that “Lionel is not at all like Amos. Lionel is aimless and often up to no good. Amos is the pride and joy of the family – a real blessing.”

Mdm Ivy Tan’s parents are no longer around. She has no other siblings too.

Mr Tan has an older brother and younger sister who are married and staying apart. However, Lionel does not speak with them. He only communicates occasionally with his paternal grandparents who reside in Ipoh, Malaysia.

Lionel is a little late for his appointment with you. You approach him at the waiting area, introduce yourself and bring him into the counselling room. He apologises profusely for being late as his class teacher had held back the class a little longer as a punishment for being noisy.
