Assignment Task :

The BN unit (boron bonded to nitrogen) is isoelectronic to the C2 unit. Solid BN can exist in two forms. The u-form is white, soft and is an insulator; the 13-form is extremely hard and abrasive, and is also an insulator.
Compare the structures of boron nitride (BN) to those of carbon. Explain the origin of the properties of both forms of boron nitride (colour, hardness, conductivity). Also explain how the properties of the forms of BN compare to the properties to the equivalent form of carbon (eg. graphite is black and a conductor) (i.e. explain in what way the properties are the same or different, as well as the reason they are the same or different).
