Subject Code : STA100
Assignment Task:

Directions

Use R to analyze the questions below.

  • You may work individually or with a partner.
  • Answers should type. Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Graphs should be properly labelled and titled.
  • This should be in a report style format. Do not assume the reader has the questions and write up a “stand-alone” document. This means that you can go back to this in a year and understand the problem and code.
  • An appendix of your R code should be listed at the end of the document. The code to create the appendix is located under Announcements on Canvas.
  • R Report I was graded mainly on format and completion. This assignment will be graded on accuracy. You will receive grades for R Report II no later than Friday, March 13th.

Additionally,

  • This is not a class assignment. Please adhere to the UC Davis Academic Code of Conduct. You may only ask your partner, the instructor, or the TA’s for help. We can help troubleshoot problems, but cannot verify if work is correct.
  • Answer all questions thoroughly.
  • Submit work to Canvas as an Html file.
  • Do not post your numerical results from R on Canvas or Piazza.

Questions

I. You will be using the dataset DRP.csv (or DRP.txt). Results of an experiment to test whether directed reading activities in the classroom help elementary school students improve aspects of their reading ability. A treatment class of 21 third- grade students participated in these activities for eight weeks, and a control class of 23 third-graders followed the same curriculum without the activities. After the eight-week period, students in both classes took a Degree of Reading Power (DRP) test which measures the aspects of reading ability that the treatment is designed to improve. The first column is the group (treatment or control), and the second is the DRP score (the higher the better).

(a) Find the lower bound and the upper bound for the 95% confidence interval for the difference in average DRP score.

(b) Interpret the confidence interval in terms of the problem.

(c) If the experimenter is interested in if the treatment group has a higher average than the control group, find the test-statistic. Interpret this value.

(d) If the experimenter is interested in if the treatment group has a higher average than the control group, find the p-value. Interpret this value.

(e) Do we fail to reject or reject the null hypothesis if α = 0.05? What is your conclusion?

II. On Canvas under Files, you will find a dataset IQ.csv. It has two columns, the first of which denotes what major a student is from (A, B, or C). The second is the IQ measured by the Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales. The goal is to determine if this IQ measure differs on average between majors.

(a) Provide the ANOVA table.

(b) Find the value of the F test statistic and the p-value. Interpret the p-value.

(c) Do we fail to reject or reject the null hypothesis?

(d) State your conclusion in terms of the problem.

(e) Plot a normal probability plot of the IQ scores. Does this data appear to be approximately normally distributed?

You may use another method to show Normality to support your answer.
