  • In a well-referenced research report of no more than 3000 words, critically review how construction contracting and contracts contribute to the problem of overruns and delays (in other words, how does the current approach to construction contracting contribute to the problem of poor cost and time performance?). Your essay should begin with a brief narrative overview of the current track-record of project delivery before critically detailing how contracting contributes to the problem of poor project delivery. In addition, your essay should conclude with reasoned recommendations of possible innovative contracting and project risk management strategies to help in the cost-effective and efficient delivery of major construction projects.

Brief description of assessment task:

This assignment requires students to work together in groups to identify and address the complex construction risks involved in the procurement, delivery and operation of large construction projects.

 

This task assesses your achievement of the following Unit Learning Outcome(s):

1. ULO1: Identify and analyse causes of risk on complex construction projects to make recommendations to minimise the identified risk.
2. ULO2: Demonstrate an understanding of project risk management systems in construction project delivery.

 

Assignment Task:
Major capital intensive projects involving several stakeholders typically present complex risks that are difficult to manage effectively. This assignment requires you to undertake a case study analysis of the ongoing WestGate Tunnel Project in Victoria

1. From a client’s perspective, identify and discuss 3 major construction risks of the case study project. Propose possible approaches clients can adopt to limit their exposure to those risks.

2. If this project used a design and build delivery approach, discuss 3 key risks the contractor might be exposed to and how the contractor might try to limit their exposure to these risks.

3. The Westgate Tunnel project is experiencing significant delays and the cost of the project continues to increase. Undertake a narrative analysis of the sources of the delays and how this could have been prevented.
The report should be contextualised for the given case study. Do not rely on internet website only to complete this task - the report should include academic references that support the discussions and points you present.
