The Scenario: 

The Busselton area in the southwest of Western Australia (WA) has a significant problem with mosquitoes due to its coastal nature, widespread wetland areas and climatic regime. An identified health risk is Ross River Virus (RRV), a mosquito-borne alpha-virus, which can cause polyarthritis and have significant personal and community impacts. 

To provide information for ongoing research into mosquito issues, a GIS database has been developed for this region using data obtained from various sources. This includes soil, wetlands, elevation, roads and towns from the WA Government State Land Information Platform (SLIP) website (https://data.wa.gov.au/), landuse/landcover from the Federal Government (http://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/aclump/land-use/data-download), satellite data from the US Geological Survey (https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/) and climatic data suitable for ecological studies from WorldClim (http://www.worldclim.org/). Some of this data has been converted from the original vector file format, reprojected, and some is incomplete. However, your work will be conducted on the data available, a situation commonly encountered when working in real-life situations. 

The core objective of this assignment is to determine the best areas to locate monitoring devices based on selected environmental variables, size of area and proximity to infrastructures.

The data consists of: 

1. soil a general soil file

2. soil_waterlog: detailed soil waterlogging potential

3. landuse: landuse/cover for area

4. wetlands: wetlands in the area including a RAMSAR wetland

5. roads: state roads

6. elevation: a DEM

7. Landsat: a Landsat 8 image

8. towns: a point file of towns

9. Bio18: precipitation of the warmest quarter 

Tasks: 

1) Use the ArcGIS toolbox and any other tools required to answer the following questions. Some will require additional data processing and tools. Explain how you have derived your results. Do NOT simply list the command(s) used but explain what you did and how. 

a) What is the spatial resolution of the elevation model and how many grid cells are there in a hectare? 

b) What is the name of the spatial reference system(s) used for the data and what is the central meridian if available? 

c) How many hectares within the total study area have a northerly aspect (0-22.5) based on the available data? 

d) How many hectares of land within the provided elevation raster lie above 100 m, and how many below 100 m? 

2) The task is to define areas for locating mosquito sampling sites based on selected environmental variables as detailed in the GIS database provided and which are considered to best represent potential mosquito habitat. 

The criteria are: 

• Must be located in Perth Coastal Zone 

• Must be located within high potential (H1/H2) waterlogged areas 

• Must be located in defined “Conservation and Natural Environment” areas 

• Must be located in areas with a slope of <=1 degree 

• Must be located within 3 km of wetland areas 

• Should be within 5 km of a (main) road 

You are required to carry out the following tasks: 

1) Draw a structure chart for a solution to the above problem. Label all boxes and arrows to provide clarity on the tools used and process followed. 

2) Use the ArcGIS toolbox (eg. the Spatial Analyst extension) to determine suitable locations for the sampling sites. Make sure you identify each individual potential area. Determine the largest five (5) contiguous areas and the associated areal extent of each of these. 

3) Display these locations on a suitable base map (using the Landsat image, available datasets or any other information you can source). 

4) Write a report explaining how you’ve obtained your solution (including any tool, variables used), describe any problems encountered, and discuss the accuracy and quality of your solution including any issues there may be with the data. Ensure you do not just describe the commands, and limit the screenshots used only to those that add value to the report.
