Assignment Task

Aim: To investigate the affect that changing the concentration of a liquid has on the rate of snow falling in a snow globe.

Introduction: A snow globe is made out of transparent glass and is filled with clear liquid which the ‘snow’ falls through. In a quality snow-globe, small pieces of ‘snow’, generally made of plastic, fall slowly back to the base of the sphere after it has been shaken ( Scammells Auctions, 2021) . When the object, acting as ‘snow’ falls, it encounters two external forces: drag force and gravitational force, slowing the object as it falls (Cram, 2020) . The drag force retards the motion of each individual ‘snowflake’ in free fall and can be affected by the concentration or viscosity of the liquid as well as the cross-sectional area, material and shape of the ‘snow’ (NASA, 2021) . The magnitude of the drag force can be found using the following equation, where is the density of the liquid (kg m-3), is the object’s cross section (m2), is the object’s velocity (m s-1) and is the drag coefficient:

When the ‘snow’ stops accelerating, it is said to reach terminal velocity which occurs when the drag force is balanced with the opposing force. When these forces are equal and opposite, the ‘snow’ stops accelerating downwards as a constant velocity is reached. Therefore, to slow down the rate at which the ‘snow’ reaches terminal velocity, a greater drag force is required.
