Assessment Task:
SEJ103: Materials Engineering Project  Assignment Help

Design brief
You are a member of an Australian manufacturer’s team working on the design of a playground structure for small children. At the end of trimester your team will ultimately be required to submit a complete design of the major components in the playground that includes detailed structural calculations and other evidence fully supporting your design decisions. For this initial design assessment task (assignment 2), each member of your team needs to undertake an individual investigation into a component of the overall playground structure.

This individual investigation should contain an assessment of the common structural material proposed by your company (see part 1 of the description of assessment task) as well as details of your material selection process and material choice/s for one of the essential equipment (see part 2 of the description of assessment task). Each
team should design the essential playground equipment as listed below; hence, each team member should choose a different essential component and focus on that for their individual report.

Essential equipment that your team isrequired to consider in the design (each student in the team should choose a different one from this list to focus on)

1. Ladder

2. Swing or Rope equipment/net

3. Monkey bar

4. Cantilever swing/other structure

5. Tower with platform or Bridge

Your company has made it clear they would like your design, concepts and ideas to impress the client as much as practical. Thus, delivering the common structural material assessment and an acceptable material selection for the essential equipment component will be adequate to pass the task (or obtain a credit for an impressive
essential component design). Any team member looking for a distinction or high distinction should also select.

one component from the additional equipment list below and deliver a high-quality material selection using the description in part 2 below (similar to the essential equipment, each team member should choose a different additional equipment component).

Additional equipment that you may consider in your design (Distinction or High Distinction – each team member should choose a different additional playground component)

6. Impact absorbing areas

7. Slides

8. Aesthetic or interactive playground surfaces – children love play areas that are aesthetically pleasing or have sensory or interactive play equipment.

9. Shade and sun protection structure

Description of the assessment task
Your company has said that they want a common structural material to be used for the frame that will link each of your essential equipment components together. They are happy for each essential equipment component in the team to be made with a different material, however, would ideally like to see an overall playground design
theme or concept that would be attractive to kids and parents (this does not need to be explained in detail, but should be agreed upon by the team). Note that for the structural frames, each team member is required to use the same unknown material, though must submit their own responses to the questions.

Part 1. Mechanical Properties – Structural Frame
For the design of structural frames, your company has given you an unknown material that you will need to assess for suitability (you suspect that your company is secretly testing your basic material engineering competence!!). There are no specifications available to assist you on the identification of the material. You decide to send a sample of the material to the lab for testing to obtain material properties that can guide you during the design of the frame. After a week, you receive a file containing recorded load-deformation data.

Following table lists the experimental data sets assigned to each group for this assessment task. You will be working in groups to analyse the results but will submit an individual technical.

B) Use your experimental data and/or stress-strain plots to determine the following key design parameters –

(i) Young’s Modulus of Elasticity (E)

(ii) Yield stress (?y) or equivalent design proof stress

(iii) Ultimate Stress (?u)

(iv) Fracture stress (?f)

(v) Ductility, and

(vi) Modulus of Toughness (ut)

(vii) Plastic deformation at ultimate stress

C) Identify the material based on experimental data

(i) Analyse your given experimental data to comment on material’s response to tension or compression, identify the material with assistance of CES EduPack, and comment on the suitability of this material for the design and construction of your playground equipment. You will need to compare this material’s key relevant properties to other materials in CES in order to provide an adequate comment on the suitability of the unknown material.

Part 2. Material Selection

For the design of your essential equipment component (and additional equipment component if you choose to undertake one), you are required to select what you consider to be the most appropriate materials, considering any relevant recommendations by Australian Standards and other design requirements you have identified. Use
CES EduPack to assist you on the material selection.

A) Select a range of suitable available materials that could be used for the construction of the essential equipment component (and additional component if selected). Don’t forget that you also have to select suitable material/s for the main frame. You must clearly show the material selection process that you have used, carefully explaining and justifying the decisions by showing evidence or highlighting any assumptions. This range of suitable material should be based on non-negotiable requirements (constraints) for the equipment and can include preliminary load/stress calculations and potentially other research-based information.
