Introduction 

This project requires analysis of beam spanning a river valley and supporting the proposed River Rapids Revolving Restaurant. The restaurant is to take advantage of some large support structures to give diners a spectacular view of the river valley. The area is exposed to very high wind loads, however, and a major concern in design comes from the forces and deflections generated by those wind loads. You will carry out an analysis of the structure. 

For this project, you should produce a set of calculations and recommendations. The questions on the following pages are designed to take you through the analysis. Your calculation set should take the form of a calculation report, as in your SM2A coursework on truss analysis. The report should therefore provide more information than you would normally include for an exam-style answer to a question. It should provide enough information for a technical reader to fully understand the 

problem and how you have addressed it, without any prior knowledge of the project. In industry, a calculation report would be submitted to the checking engineers on a project. A calculation report should provide, as a minimum: 

• a record of all the input parameters required for your calculation, such as loading, geometry and environmental conditions, your assumptions and the simplifications used in design; 

• enough detail on your calculation for it to be clearly followed, and repeated, by someone with no background to the problem; 

• a description of the outputs of your calculations, and comments on their consequences for the design and construction of the structure, and notes on any potential changes in design, material or construction method which could improve the structural efficiency or performance. 

This project will be marked according to the University Extended Common Marking Scheme, with the breakdown of marks as given after each part of the project, and according to the specific criteria in Table 1. Guidance on what constitutes a Pass and Excellent mark in this context is given in that table.

1. A sketch of the proposed structure is shown in Figure 1. The wind imposes a total load of 100 kN, and can be simplified as a horizontal point load acting 30 m above the base of the tower. The weight of the observation deck is 400 kN, and acts down the centroid of the beam-column supporting it. 

(a) Considering the free body for the beam column supporting the observation deck,

i) draw its structural diagram, including applied forces. 

ii) draw the bending moment, shear and axial force diagrams.
