Intro

Meet Ryan. Ryan is a 12 year old year 7 student, who began year 7 in 2020. Ryan has mild-moderate autism which manifests as social issues and phobias, which the school was made aware of at the beginning of the year, however this did not pose a real issue, and he regularly sees a psychiatrist about the condition. Ryan’s creative mind allowed him to excel in art and English, and he also enjoys science and mathematics. Staff did notice that Ryan often ate alone at the beginning of the year, but he did not seem distressed and was content during classes. When the pandemic started, and schools were forced into lockdown, Ryan actually seemed to cope with the transition to online learning better than most, and was able to communicate well with his peers and teachers, although he often voiced concerns about COVID. Once school transitioned back to face-to-face classes, Ryan immediately began to show a change in behaviour. He became increasingly obsessed with hygiene, wearing a face mask and constantly sanitizing his hands and avoiding contact with anything he considered a potential fomite like door knobs, desks and chairs, unless he could clean them with wipes he would bring from home. Although this did not immediately pose a problem to class functioning as he was still interested in learning and organised himself quickly, he rapidly gained attention in the school and became an easy target for bullies. Ryan had made a few friends during the online lessons, but was struggling to maintain the relationships in person, and now he is effectively alienated at all times. Ryan’s parents have voiced their concerns as he is reluctant to come to school and is becoming increasingly withdrawn at home. When at school, he has taken to isolating himself as much as possible and becomes increasingly irritable in classes as other students purposely try to make him uncomfortable by coughing in his direction, or touching his belongings. Many staff members have given up trying to placate Ryan during class, turning a blind eye to the bullying or making feeble attempts to intervene. Ryan’s psychiatrist in now liaising with the school as he has become concerned about Ryan’s mood.
