  • Choose one scenario from the two provided below. 
  • Patrick Jones
  • Patrick Jones is a 3 month old male infant who has been admitted to the Horizon Hospital paediatric ward with a differential diagnosis of gastroenteritis. He presented to the Emergency Department with a 48 hour history of vomiting and diarrhoea. Patrick lives with his mother Annie, his father Ben, and his 4 year old sibling Gemma. Gemma has also experienced vomiting and diarrhoea for the past 48 hours. His mother Annie Jones was diagnosed with postnatal depression when Patrick was 2 weeks old. Annie is rooming in with Patrick while he is in hospital, and Ben is looking after Gemma at home.
  • Harry Tehrani
  • Harry Tehrani is a 10 year old boy with Down Syndrome who has been admitted to the Horizon Hospital paediatric ward post surgical reduction of a fractured L) ulna. He presented to the Emergency Department via ambulance post a fall from a balance beam at a Paralympics sports training facility. Harry lives with his mother Jasmina, his father Mahjid, and his 6 month old sibling Sophia. Sophia is also an in-patient of the paediatric ward, admitted post a febrile convulsion.  Mahjid is rooming in with Harry, whilst Jasmina is rooming in with Sophia. 
  • Using your chosen scenario, discuss the role of the Registered Nurse (RN) in Child Aware Practice.

  • The completed assignment will need to be submitted via the NURS 2022 Health of Infants, Children and Young People course site Assignment 1: written assessment submission link by Friday 27 August. 2021, 17:00 hrs. 
  • It is to be submitted in a WORD document via Learnonline and presented as a scholarly essay (guide provided below) in keeping with the Academic Writing Requirements.

  • Introduce the purpose and structure of the essay. Introduce the chosen scenario. Outline how you will address the essay topic.
  • Body of essay (1,200 words)
  • Explain Child Aware Practice. Outline the principles of consent for infants, children and young people. Discuss how the RN can identify signs that may indicate abuse or neglect for your scenario, and how the RN will comply with Mandatory Reporting requirements in your state. 
  • Consider your chosen scenario and integrate it in the body of the essay to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the essay topic. For example, ensure you outline how the principles of consent specifically relate to your chosen scenario, and what circumstances or information provided may be suggesting of possible abuse or neglect.
  • Use relevant legislation and academic literature to assist your discussion.
