General guidance
The Format of the Research Proposal
The proposal needs to include the following sections/headings:
1. Abstract (approx. 100 words)
Outline of the aims and methods and an indication of the potential implications of the results. Your abstract must be structured and should include the following topics:
• Aims (short introduction from literature and research question)
• Methods (including study design, sample characteristics)
• Conclusion (Implications the results will have for future research or policy and practice)
2. Introduction (background, literature review and research question) (approx. 500-600 words)
This sets the scene for the proposed research.
The literature review needs to demonstrate that you have read both broadly and specifically on the topic. It starts with some background from the literature including both theoretical and empirical findings (findings from published research) and identifies any gaps in our knowledge. You then need to provide a clear rationale for your own proposed research. At the end of this section you should include the aims and/or research questions of the study, which should be addressing one or more of the gaps in the literature.
4. Method (approx. 600-700 words)
Your method section needs to consist of the following sub-headings:
• Research design: This sub-section needs to present a clear and scientific research design based on what has been covered in the module and apply it to your research question (e.g. quantitative or qualitative, naturalistic/lab-based observation, experimental/non-experimental/quasi-experimental, etc.)
• Ethics: This sub-section should include details of how the study will deal with important ethical considerations, for instance obtaining informed consent, informing the participants about their right to withdraw, how you will ensure
confidentiality/anonymity, the debriefing procedure, and any issues relating to the protection of both the participants and researcher. Finally, if any deception will be used in the study this must be justified.
