Assignment Task -

Assignment Aims
For this assignment you are required to design and report the methodology for a study of ‘employee recovery processes’ that is part of a broader consultancy project on workplace stress in a UK call centre (which has 500 call centre agents based in teams of 8-10 persons). In particular, the managers of the call centre, who have commissioned the consultancy project, want you to design a study that will help them better understand the following questions:

1 Does workload inhibit after-work recovery processes in call centre agents?
2 What are the effects of after-work recovery processes on call centre agents’ psychological well-being and task performance at work?

The project brief states that the methodology of the study must:

1 Take a mixed-methodological approach, i.e., it must include both quantitative and qualitative methods.
2 Include an online quantitative survey.
3 Include an interview-based component.
4 Address key methodological concerns, e.g., causality, common method variance, so as to ensure that the evidence is of the highest possible quality.
5 Adopt Sonnentag and Fritz’s (2007) conceptualization of recovery processes as having four main components: psychological detachment, relaxation strategies, mastery strategies, and control strategies.
6 Last no longer than a year (and that the final report be handed in one month after the end of the study), involve a maximum of three researchers, and be as cost effective as possible.

Assignment Report & Structure
The methodology that you design is to be reported in a 1500 word document. The report should consist of three parts.
Part 1. Overview of Methodology
This section will set out and provide an overview of the mixed-methodological approach that you have designed. In this section marks will be awarded for:
1 A clear description of the methodological design.
2 Your understanding of methodological issues, for example, by justifying your design choices (e.g., why this particular approach to mixed methods) and by showing how your design has addressed common methodological issues (e.g., causality, common method variance etc.).
3 Discussing the limitations and weaknesses of your design, and how this limits the quality of the evidence produced.
4 You do not have to state how the data will be analysed.

Part 2. Survey Design

This section will describe the survey (i.e., all key components) that will be used in the study and how it will be administered. The full survey must be included in an appendix.
In this section marks will be awarded for:
• A clear description of the survey and the measures used.
• A discussion of survey design issues considered and justification for choices made.

Part 3. Interview Design
This section will provide an overview of the interview you have designed and (when appropriate) it must include example questions from the interview schedule. The full interview schedule must be provided in the appendix.
In this section marks will be awarded for:
• A clear description of the interview design.
• A discussion of design issues considered and justification for choices made.

Things to consider
1 The proportion of marks given to each section.
2 The need to provide references at all points in the assignment. You need to reference where your ideas came from.
