Assignment Task

This assignment addresses the following Assessment Criteria -

1.1 Explain the principles of the production and modification of X-rays for imaging
1.2 Explain the principles of the use of X-rays in imaging internal body structures
1.3 Explain the principles and uses of a CT scanner

2.1 Explain the principles of the production and the detection of ultrasonic waves
2.2 Explain the principle of echo location and how this is applied to the examination of internal body structures
2.3 Apply relevant formula to solve problems using Doppler technique and reflection of sound waves at a boundary

3.1 Explain the choice of radionuclide in medical tracer studies
3.2 Explain the principles of forming an image using a gamma camera

4.1 Explain the principles of magnetic resonance imaging

5.1 Compare and contrast the uses and relative advantages of X-rays, ultrasound, gamma camera and MRI in examining internal structures
5.2 Evaluate the hazards of X-rays, ultrasound, gamma camera and MRI in medical imaging and explain the control methods used to minimize risk to patients and operating staff

Q1. The human body is made up of many organs, and each organ of the body is made up of specialized cells. Different medical modalities e.g. X-rays, ultrasound, gamma camera and MRI can be used to identify certain abnormalities or improper functioning of the organ.
The simplified diagram shows a modern X-ray tube.

(a) For each of the labelled parts, state what it is and explain its purpose.
(b) On the diagram draw and label
(i) The direction of the electron beam,
(ii) The direction of the useful X-ray beam.
(c) Briefly explain this statement. “X-rays are attenuated as they pass through the body”.
(d) Produce a brief report detailing the uses and advantages of each type of medical modality. You may consider using a table to compare and contrast above mentioned techniques in your report.

Q-2 - A conventional X-ray image provides a quick and cheap way to examine patients’ internal structures.
Describe the use of X-rays in imaging internal body structures including the use of image intensifiers.
A coloured X ray image of a patient’s intestine after a barium meal notice how the outline of the intestine is easy to identify against the surrounding soft tissues.
Explain how soft tissues like the intestines can be imaged using a barium meal
Name the main components of a CAT scanner
Explain function of each main components of a CAT scanner. Use a diagram if you wish.
Identify the use of CT scanner in medical imaging.
