Assignment Task :

Coursework Brief
The client, LP Developers, has been in the UK construction business for the past eleven years, and they are currently investing in a mixed-development. As a Professional Quantity Surveyor, you have been engaged to provide independent and impartial advice on the contract’s administration.
A construction contract has been signed based on the JCT 2016 Standard Building Contract with Quantities (SBC/Q). The key details of the contract are as follows:

Contract Particulars

Mechnical Work

Task 1
The regular progress of the works has been disrupted due to events for which the contractor is not responsible. The client, LP Developers, anticipate that the contractor will submit a loss and/or expense claim and have requested that you provide advice on what they could expect based on the contract conditions. Critically evaluate and explain the relevant clauses under the JCT SBC/Q dealing with the issue(s) and their implications. You may also mention the potential heads of claims that you consider important upon which the claim could be based.

Task 2
The contractor’s Quantity Surveyor has prepared a price statement following the contract administrator’s instruction for a proposed variation to part of the works (Variation Number 6). However, the employer’s Quantity Surveyor has rejected the costings on the grounds that the rates in the contract bills of quantities have not been used throughout.
a. Advise the client in writing (a letter), and explain the situation(s) under which contract bill rates would be inappropriate for pricing the variations.
b. Also, briefly (in the letter above) explain the steps to be taken should they fail to reach an agreement.

Task 3
Using the information below (progress of work and other contract details), prepare an interim valuation number 3 for the month ending April 2020

Assignment format
The length of an assignment is limited by a set number of words to contribute towards the development of writing skills and to ensure all work is assessed equitably. We, therefore, require you to complete your assignment within the number of words specified in the assignment brief. You will need to think carefully about how best to explain your case within the permitted number of words, using, for example, an appropriate mix of text, drawings, diagrams and tables, supplemented by information contained in appendices. Please also include intext citations of contract clauses wherever necessary.
Please also remember that a report can be enhanced or damaged through layout, for example, placing all tables and figures in appendices can hamper the flow of the discussion. Decisions, therefore, need to be made about the most appropriate place to use tables, etc., to support your case. The specified word count refers to the main body of the report and does not include front cover, title page, contents page, executive summary, reference list, bibliography or appendices. (The word count does include headings, tables and in-text citations, but not equations or diagrams)
Appendices themselves will not be marked. However, inappropriate use of appendices will be taken into consideration when awarding the final mark. Words that exceed the maximum allowed will not be marked. If in doubt, you should discuss this with the Module Leader before submitting.
Your report should be word processed in size 11 font, using Arial Standard Font. Please present your work in sections or paragraphs separated by a one-line space where necessary. A spacing of 1.5 lines should be used. Your assignment should be professionally presented, and where applicable, include a letter to or from the relevant project stakeholder (e.g. Task 2). References should be included at the end of your report and listed alphabetically by author’s surname according to the Harvard style of referencing.
