Statistics Assessment Task

Objectives
This assessment addresses Unit Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3:
• Discriminate the most appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics to use in a given health context,
• Analyse health data using statistical software and interrogate the test assumptions, and
• Interpret and communicate the results of computer-generated statistical analyses.

Overview of task
Your task is to write the statistical methods and results sections of a hypothetical manuscript that focuses on bone mineral density in a sample of individuals who participated in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The SPSS data set you are required to analyse and the specific questions you need to answer area available on the Assessment 2 page of Blackboard. Please note this is an individual assignment and that you must be logged into Blackboard under your username to access the assessment tasks and data set which have been assigned to you. The data coding manual for the data set is provided at the end of this document.

1. Describe the demographic and lifestyle characteristics of the people included in the sample. Describe the type and frequency of fractures experienced by the participants.
2. Describe and test the relationship between having had any fracture and a) sex, b) race/ethnicity, and c) having taken prednisone or cortisone daily for a month or longer.
3. Describe and test the relationship between L2 bone mineral density (BMD) and a) mother ever having had a hip fracture, and b) race/ethnicity.
4. Describe and test the association between L2 BMD and a) age and b) body mass index (BMI).
5. Using a multivariable model determine whether age, sex, BMI or having taken prednisone or cortisone daily for a month or longer explain variation in L2 BMD. Is sex an effect modifier for the relationship between L2 BMD and BMI? Report and interpret the minimum model.
6. On average, is there a difference in the L2 BMD and the Trochanter BMD?
7. Develop and report the minimum model to predict the L2 BMD using BMD data collected from other locations in the body. Use your model to predict the L2 BMD for an individual with the following BMD values:
• Femoral neck BMD = 0.90 g/cm2
• Trochanter BMD = 0.74 g/cm2
• Intertrochanter BMD = 1.20 g/cm2
• Ward’s triangle BMD = 0.69 g/cm2
• L1 BMD = 0.96 g/cm2
• L3 BMD = 1.07 g/cm2
• L4 BMD = 1.05 g/cm2
