Assignment Task :

Topics(PSYC2650)
1.
It is often assumed that our experiences are a direct reflection of the information in our environment, and that they faithfully represent our physical surroundings. However, in this class we discussed several phenomena suggesting that our mental lives are actively constructed rather than passively determined. Discuss some of the evidence within the domains of perception and memory that support this view, and provide an argument as to why our
cognitive system might employ such a counterintuitive strategy.

2. Imagine you were hired as a consultant to the Ministry of Education and were tasked with informing policy makers on how to optimize learning in the classroom based on memory research. Describe why educators should utilize principles from cognitive psychology in designing curricula, and provide three recommendations to improve classroom education in high schools using research findings to support your recommendations.

3. The precise organization of brain function is a controversial topic that has yet to be fully resolved. On one end of the spectrum, the modular view purports that the brain is organized into isolable, functionally-specific regions. At the other end of the spectrum, the equipotentiality view holds that the brain operates as a whole and cannot be decomposed into distinct, functional subunits. Based on the evidence discussed in class and that obtained in your independent research, provide a reasoned argument supported by empirical findings that articulates your position within this spectrum.

4. In contrast to the once dominant view that human beings are inherently rational agents, the work of Kahneman and Tversky revealed that our judgment is often subverted by systematic biases and heuristics that lead to cognitive illusions. Discuss the evidence that refutes the idea that humans are fundamentally rational beings, as well as what, if any, strategies we can use to avoid these traps when making judgments under uncertainty. Justify your argument.

5. Traditional laboratory-based research is a cornerstone of cognitive psychology. It allows researchers to examine cognitive processes in a controlled environment, minimizing the influence of confounding variables. However, some researchers have argued that such an approach is too artificial, and have questioned whether laboratory findings generalize beyond the lab and into the real-world. Outline your position on this debate, and support your argument as to why the approach you support is ideal using empirical evidence.
