Overview
The writing of laboratory reports is an essential part of Cognitive Psychology course. It is a 2 Credit course. One important function of this course is to give students a hands-on practical experience about how to write experimental and laboratory reports.
The course is intended for Level 400 students who are required to analyse experimental data and submit report for evaluation. The student need not be a participant of the experiment but is considered as an experimenter who is expected to analyse data generated from an experiment.

The data generated each year will be made available at the end of the First semester and students will be given a period of two weeks to analyse and write such reports for grading. Each report should be submitted with plagiarism report attached, indicating the similarity index and using preferably Turnitin application. This can be assessed through University of Ghana’s Sakai portal site.

Purpose of the Report
The purpose of a lab report is to communicate to others what you did, why you did it, how you did it, what you found and what you think it means. Readers of reports will sometimes want the answer to very precise questions and do not want to wade through the whole report looking for this information. For this reason, it is essential to follow a standard format, with headings and subheadings which allows the reader to locate the information that he or sherequires immediately without having to work through the entire report.

The simple rule for report writing is 'Could someone replicate your experiment using the information you have provided them with?' Reports are intended to be read by someone who knows nothing about your experiment. They will usually see the title first, then maybe read the abstract and only then read the bulk of the report.

There is no single style which is more 'correct' than any other. However, there are widely accepted standards and conventions which should be followed. An outline for the Department of Psychology, University of Ghana is provided for you to follow.

TITLE OF EXPERIMENT:
Channel of stimulus presentation and type of processing on retrieval of meaningful abstract words
In this experiment, the experimenter is interested in knowing the effect of channel of presentation of stimuli (through either visual or audio) and the type or nature of processing (either shadow or non-shadow) on the recall of meaningful abstract words.

Shadow as you have learnt in the literature means repeating the words after hearing or seeing the words, and non-shadow means not repeating the words. The following 15 words were presented visually at two processing levels (i.e. visual shadow and visual non-shadow).
The same 15 words were also presented using the audio channel at two levels (audio shadow and audio nonshadow).
