Assignment Task :

The Role of Selfishness and Peer Pressure in Predicting Environmentally Conscious Behaviour

The aims of this assignment are to (a) consolidate your understanding of correlation and multiple regression, including moderated multiple regression, and (b) give you practice in writing up the results of such analyses in the appropriate APA 6th format (i.e., 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association). Using the Introduction below and the SPSS data file that is provided online (a2 3010 2020.sav), your task is to conduct the relevant analyses and complete the research report by writing the Method, Results and Discussion sections. You need to:

(1) Describe in sufficient detail the participants, measures and procedure. Make sure you describe how the key constructs were measured, and report scale reliabilities where this information is available. N.B. the use of subheadings for the different constructs within the Measures section may be helpful.

(2) Report and interpret the results. Report and interpret the results of the preliminary analyses. Report and interpret the statistical tests that correspond to each prediction and append the SPSS syntax used to test the hypotheses. Describe the procedure of analyses where appropriate.

If the predicted interaction (Hypothesis 3) is significant, you will need to:

(a) follow it up using simple slopes analysis,

(b) graph the interaction, and

(c) report tests of the simple slopes.

Download the Excel Macro file created by Prof. Louis for plotting simple slopes (available in the Assignment 2 folder on Blackboard; also see tutorial notes). You may use the Excel Macro file to plot the simple slopes. You may also use hand calculations, but you must still create a graph (with error bars) in Excel for inclusion in the text.

(3) Discuss the results. Without going beyond the literature reported in the Introduction, discuss the findings of the study. You should restate the overall purpose of the study; summarise the results, including a clear statement of directionality where applicable; note the outcome for each hypothesis; and relate results to the relevant literature. You should address the theoretical and practical / social implications. You should also discuss a key study strength and limitation, and provide directions for future research.

Note that you are not expected to read the references or do any additional reading for this assignment. Use the information and references provided to you in the Introduction as the basis for your Discussion.

Assignment 2 is marked out of 80, but worth 20% of your grade. A late penalty applies of 1% out of this 20% per 24 hours, including weekends (i.e., 4 marks/ day). If you submit late, this late penalty will be applied by the undergraduate administration team. Note: late submissions should still be uploaded via the Assignment 2 Turnitin portal on the course website.

The overall word limit is 1500 words of text in the Method, Results, and Discussion sections. This excludes the Appendix (where you will present your SPSS syntax only), and any Table(s), Figure(s), and Figure Caption(s) which you may include in the Results section.

The marking criteria for Assignment 2 are available on Blackboard. It is recommended that you review this as you prepare and finalise your assignment write-up.

Be sure to consult the Common Mistakes sheet.

The Format Expectations workbook (available on Blackboard) provides advice on writing up statistical results and presenting figures. You might also benefit from looking at the Method and Results sections of published journal articles that report standard multiple regression and hierarchical regression analyses.
