Essay Assessment Task

1. How are power and culture theorized in the culture-development discourse?
2. Translation scholarship has demonstrated a growing emphasis on the collective control or shaping of cultural knowledge. With reference to at least two translated texts, critically discuss how culture and power impact on translation and on the much broader issues of development practice?
3. The paradox that development can be seen as defunct and yet in the next step expounded as the only way forward is deeply embedded in modern culture. Therefore, any alternative to development must open paths to move beyond the modern Western culture. Discuss.
4. The emergence in the Andes Region and Ecuador of Buen Vivir, (living well or collective well-being) are seen as new guiding principles for a new regimen of development approaches. What are some of the possibilities as well as inconsistencies? Discuss. (You may use examples of guiding principles from other places, for example, the concept of Ubunthu from Africa)
5. The term ‘intercultural dialogue’, as promulgated by European organisations such as UNESCO, the British Council and the Council of Europe is now in wide currency and is seen to offer much hope to peace and harmony among nations. Write a critical examination of the concept and its relevance under present conditions of globalisation and conflict.
6. How is it that when we (students, researchers) are producing knowledge in development, planning, disaster or social studies, our knowledge (modernity/rationality) and other knowledges don't meet as equals, and why is that a problem? Discuss.
7. Lena Dominelli and Simon Hackett (2011) posit that social work is still influenced by ethnocentric European universality claims that pay little interest to what has been termed locality specific and culturally relevant forms of social work. Discuss by examining the development of social work as a discipline and a profession in Australia in the last 50 years.
8. How would you open spaces of intercultural dialogue for the development of creative and meaningful responses to problems in your field or profession? Discuss examining the concept of ‘intercultural dialogue’ (post -development to decolonial option) and its implications in your discipline or field of practice.
9. More recently, Dr. Abdo Abboud, Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Damascus changed direction, no longer translating so much, but instead examining translated texts from a literary-critical point of view. His book “The Emigration of the Texts” (Hidschra al-Nusuus), was a collection of studies on translation from the German to the Arabic and on the relationship between German and Arabic literature. Dr Abboud then pursued research into German stories that had been translated into Arabic; and became someone who studies and criticizes translations from the German. But that doesn’t mean he’ll never translate anything again.
Discuss any similar intercultural journey of someone you are familiar with or are reading about – and examine the shift from direct translation to examining the cultural-political and social context of translation itself – and in what way is this approach an important contribution to Translation Studies?
10. It is said that Hayao Miyasaki’s cinematic works are so good because he’s not looking at things from the outside; but is often entering into the mind, into the worldview, of very different people: children, young women, older women, animals, spirits. As Japanese Studies scholar Susan Napier says; Miyasaki has this incredible empathetic imagination. Discuss, also looking at other visual or non-textual forms of intercultural productions that achieve “cult” followings and local-global intercultural connections.
