Assignment Task

Podcast

This assessment requires you to describe and analyse the social issue that your group will design a program for, and critically reflect on the population’s experience of that social issue.Further information:This assessment is intended to assist you in the development of your program (AT2), and it does this by asking you to ‘pull apart’ the social issue. Analyse how the issue is framed, identify what existing research, theories and frameworks are used to represent the issue, and critically reflect on what your relationship is to the issue and the population(s) who experience it. In doing so, relate your analysis to the content covered in the first four weeks of this course, as well as your own individual research.Your group can select from following social issues:Ageing in LGBTIQA+ populationMental ill health in popular cultureStudent stress and COVID-19Body image in trans and non-binary communitiesSingle parent financial insecurityFamily conflict and COVID-19Social isolation in people with a disabilitySexual harassment, bullying and workplace cultureSocial media and mental ill health in young peopleAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s connection to cultureAcademic achievement and self-esteemRacial diversity in the mediaYour group may also choose your own social issue, with approval from your tutor. In writing up this assessment:As the description suggests, this task requires you to do a number of things in a small amount of words. Firstly, you need to clearly describe the social issue – define what the issue is, and who is most affected by it. You might like to use this as your introduction. Secondly, you need to identify how the social issue has been framed as problematic, and how power plays a role in reinforcing its framing. You might like to discuss the role that policy and media play, and whether this is different or the same as how research frames the issue. Third, you need to talk about what research there is on the issue, as well as the theories and frameworks that underpin this research. What are the most obvious themes that arise from this research? What do they suggest about how the issue is understood? Fourth, you will need to talk about any ideas or assumptions you have about the issue. What informs your understanding eg. how are you impacted by the social issue, and in what ways? You might like to use this section as your conclusion. Please note: this is an individual assessment, however this task will enable your group to draw upon each other’s understanding of the social issue and its representation for you to build your program together in the second assessment. There will be some tutorial-based activities to support the development of this assessment, however you will be required to plan and write your submission in your own time.Referencing style: Either Harvard or APA (7th) is acceptableAssessment criteria:You will be assessed on the extent to which you:Describe the social issue and population (4)Identify the ways in which the social issue has been framed (8)Identify the existing research on the social issue and analyse theories and frameworks used to represent the issue (8)Critically reflect on your relationship to the social issue and population (6)Adhere to conventions of good writing, referencing, expression and grammar (4)RubricPopulation description and reflectionPopulation description and reflectionCriteriaRatingsPtsThis criterion is linked to a learning outcomeDescribe the social issue and population   4 to >2.4 PtsHigh DistinctionThe paper clearly describes the social issue and the impacted population in excellent detail.
