Assignment Task

Extensions and late penalties: Please refer to the Unit Guide for information on late penalties and how to apply for Special Consideration if you require more time for your assignment. Note that late penalties will be applied if you have not received an approved extension. Additionally, should your assessment be too long, it will also be penalized.

Instructions:

1. DO NOT WRITE YOUR NAME on your assessment, as either your file name or on your reflection. This is because the reflections will be anonymously marked. Only include your student number as an identifier.
2. Please use your student number and the name of the view that you will be engaging with as your file name, e.g. 49321654_Stoicism.
3. Do not include a cover page. Simply put your student number at the top of the first page, put your title, and proceed with your reflection.
4. All assignments must be submitted online via Turnitin. You can only submit once.
5. Research: You are NOT required to read anything beyond the required readings, although you may.
6. Referencing: You can use any Arts/Humanities style, such as the Harvard, Chicago, or APA styles, and you should be consistent. Your in-text citations should include page numbers. Please do not use a numerical referencing style (such as the Vancouver style) that is used in the Sciences.
Please see the links on how to reference, in the Assessments section of iLearn.
7. Include a word count at the end. A penalty will be applied for very long reflections.
8. A marking rubric is included below. This is a qualitative, not a quantitative, rubric, which means that it is used to give feedback but not to determine your grade.
9. Please use size 12 font with 1.5 or double line spacing.

Task:

The aim of this assignment is to reflect on what you have learned in part 1 of the unit, on the nature of happiness.

You should do three things in a total of 700 words to complete your reflective essay.

1) Write down the understanding of happiness that you had on commencing your studies in the unit. How would you have answered the question, ‘what is the key to happiness?’, before you started to read the views of Epicurus, the Stoics and Aristotle? You might like to say here what views of happiness you were opposed to, if any. If you had not thought about the issue before, or feel uncomfortable about the way the question is put, say why.

2) Summarise and explain one set of views about the nature of happiness that you have studied so far. You might pick one of the texts by Epicurus, the Stoics or Aristotle. Or you might compare and contrast key aspects of these approaches to understanding happiness. You do not need to give extensive references or to read anything more than the relevant sections in the course readings. But you should aim to give an accurate summary of at least one conception of the nature of happiness that you have studied so far.

3) Reflect on how the ideas about happiness you have studied so far in the unit have affected your initial understanding of happiness. If your ideas about happiness have changed, explain how and why. If they haven’t changed, you should also explain why. You might also reflect on whether you are more or less confident that your initial understanding of happiness was the correct one.
