Assignment 2: RESEARCH REPORT component
The purpose of this component of the assignment is to explore the construct of sustained attention and vigilance, based on three different attentional measures. You are required to generate a full research report on this topic including introduction, method, results and discussion, along with an abstract and title page. Your report will be between 2000 and 3000 words long from the beginning of the introduction through to the end of the discussion. The title page, abstract and reference list are not included in the word count.Robertson, I.H., Manly, T., Andrade, J., Baddeley, B.T., & Yiend, J. (1997). 'Oops!': Performance correlates of attentional failures in traumatic brain injured and normal subjects. Neuropsychologia, 35(6), 747-758. DOI: 10.1016/S0028-3932(97)00015-8 You will begin with a general introductory paragraph on why sustained attention is interesting You will construct arguments about different forms of attention, different measures of attention and why the selected measures might tap different aspects of attention. Your introduction will build an argument to support the two hypotheses below. Note that you may choose to re-word these hypotheses or state them more clearly in terms of your own line of argument Your results will begin with a summary how the data were selected for analysis and a description of the table of data (Table 1 provided for you). You will describe the observed relationships between the measures reported in Table 1, highlighting relationships relevant to your hypotheses. If you observed any relationships of interest in Table 1, you will then comment on their statistical significance or effect size. You will describe the data presented in Figure 1 (provided for you) highlighting comparisons relevant to your hypotheses. If you observed any comparisons of interest in Figure 1, you will then comment on their statistical significance, including how this was determined. Discussion (approximately 700 – 1000 words) [20% of marks] Your discussion will begin with a summary of the findings You will tie your findings back to any literature presented in the introduction You will discuss limitations of the study, implications of the study and future directions for research The suggested references for your limitations and directions for future research include:Your Reference list will be in APA format and will include at least 2 journal articles selected from the ones identified above, and 2 to 3 other references. Extra references can be journal articles or secondary sources such as textbooks or review articles. More than 5 references can be used, but may make the task of writing the report more difficult. Marks for referencing will be allocated on the basis of choice of appropriate references, appropriate in-text citations and appropriate APA formatting of both in-text and reference list citations. You will not gain extra marks for having a longer reference list. Structure, presentation, writing style [15% of marks]This section includes the overall structure of your research report, such as writing style, logical structure of arguments and the integration between different elements of the report (Does the title match the content? Does the abstract summarise your story? Does the discussion tie up all the issues raised in the introduction? Does your report tell a coherent story?)WORD COUNT: You are expected to write between 2000 and 3000 words for this report. This word count does not include the title page, references, Figure or Table captions, or abstract. It does include the text of the introduction, method, results and Title PageYou need to create an APA-formatted Title Page. The title page will include a title for your research report, and should give the reader an idea of what you are presenting. You DO NOT require a Running Head. You should also include your name and student ID on the title page, along with the due date of the assignment and the word count. There is no need to identify your tutor or to provide a cover sheet – during the submission process, you are attesting that the assignment is your own work, and note that we use plagiarism detection software to check that the sentences and paragraphs of the introduction and discussion are not copied from other sources including past assignments from this and similar units.AbstractYour abstract will be a single paragraph of no more than 150 words in length and is not included in your word count. It should briefly introduce the topic and aim of the study, describe the important characteristics of the sample, what task was performed, what we found, and what the implications might be. You do not need to include references in the abstract, nor do you include detailed statistics. You can often state the hypotheses as part of your findings to save words. It is good to provide a conclusion or “take-home message” at the end of your abstract. Introduction (this title should be removed in your report to conform with APA format) Your introduction will be based on the Robertson et al article but you can also add in extra material to support your line of argument towards your hypotheses. You will need to discuss different types of attention and the ways in which they are measured. You are introducing the experimental tasks on sustained attention that we performed in Week 4, and we will be testing two hypotheses based on these tasks. You may choose to word these hypotheses more clearly in line with your own line of argument.
H1: that the SART performance will correlate with everyday attentional failures as measured by the CFQ but that performance on RVIP will not.
H2: there will be faster responding prior to SART errors. Your introduction should build up a logical argument for these two hypotheses. If you adjust the hypotheses, you will need to ensure that your line of argument leads to your specific hypotheses, that your hypotheses are testable by the data provided, and that your method and results are written to align with your hypotheses.
