Sustainable development, and renewable  energy impact on economic growth

Under this coursework, the students are expected to produce an independent report on sustainability for a specific location using the following objectives.

The following narrative gives a flavour of the complex trade-off between economic growth, social dimensions, environmental impact and regulatory compliance towards sustainable development. Sustainability has a different meaning to different people in different local context.

Narrative: When economists talk of sustainable economic growth, they are usually thinking of low inflationary growth that avoids an economic boom and bust. For example, the Lawson boom of the 1980s saw growth of 5-6% a year, which was unsustainable; it caused inflation and shortly afterwards there was an economic recession. However, sustainability increasingly raises questions of environmental sustainability.

The first thing that springs to mind is the 'Dismal Prophecies of Malthus.' Back in the nineteenth century Malthus saw a rising population and predicted the world would face food shortages because the population was rising, but, the available land wasn't. Yet, Malthus failed to anticipate the rate of productivity growth. In other words, with better technology,  better farming practices the output from land has increased substantially. Productivity increased so much, an economy like the UK only has 3% of its workforce employed in agriculture. This is the first aspect of growth. Economic growth doesn't have to involve greater consumption of raw materials and more land. Better technology can enable higher output with the same amount of raw materials - or even less.

Sustainable Development can be defined as the development to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. In other words, we can say the future generations should not face the crises of the resources which we are using today.  Energy access is increasingly seen as a vital catalyst to wider social and economic development, enabling education, health, and sustainable agriculture, and creating jobs.

Energy for productive uses is particularly important to enable local business innovation and create a more vibrant economy for communities and countries while providing societal benefits as well. The role of energy in sustainable development is very important as without energy no development can take place irrespective of the energy type. Hence, we can say energy is the base (heart) of each and every transformation.

Economic development is based on economic growth whilst Sustainable development concept is described through three dimensions (social, economic, environmental). The economic growth concept is included in economic development and it is based, especially,  on gross domestic product. On the other hand, the sustainable development model is a  multidisciplinary concept and it relies on reducing resource consumption, producing clean alternative energy, protection of environment factors, quality of life in its complexity.

Please follow these instructions to produce your individual report:

Your report should be within 2500 words.

  •  Provide citations for any text, data or ideas you use from other sources. Use in-line citations with full references at the end of your paper. In-line citations are not to be counted as part of your word count; the references are not part of the word count.  Please see the academic integrity note.
  •  Ensure that you use energy data and economical data to extrapolate trends for sustainable development.
  •  Use as many references as you need but include a minimum of 10 academic references that are published not earlier than January 2017.
  •  Your report must have an introduction/rationale which must set the context and it  should also provide the reader with a structure of your report.
  •  It is expected that the report must flow logically/sequentially; please don’t jump from one issue to the other and come back again to the earlier issues.
  • You must clearly segment your response. Please do not write one long answer without clearly separating all the sub-themes in your analysis.
  •  To improve your presentation and also let key points stand out, please use paragraphs effectively. Break your points into distinct stand-alone paragraphs so arguments stand out.

Objectives:

The students should produce a report to address the following objectives for your given  location as per table-1:

• Analyse the effects of renewable energy production and consumption on economic growth in your given location.

• Which combination of changes, costs, and risks need to be socially acceptable to derive sustainable development?

• What measures need to be taken for your location to meet the sustainable development goals?
