Module Aim

The aim of the module is to develop an understanding of the nature, process and management of organisational change. Highlighting various models and approaches to organisational change, the module uses case analysis to examine the interpersonal, group and organisational issues associated with change management in a range of situations. By analysing the usefulness and drawbacks of different models the most suitable approach in a specific situation and how to develop an implementation strategy can be identified.

  • A surgical exploration of the conceptual and terminology of organisational change. What is organisational change? Why do organisation, people and system accept or reject change?
  • A process perspective of managing change; process models, perspectives and leading change. Recognising the need for change; starting the change process and building change relationships. Diagnosing what needs to be changed – gathering and interpreting information.                                                                              
  • Leading and managing people issues; the role of leadership, power, politics and stakeholder management. Communicating change. Motivating others to change; supporting others through change.
  • Planning – shaping implementation strategies and developing a change plan. Types of intervention; action research and appreciative inquiry. High performance change and development. Business process re-engineering and lean processes. Culture profiling and selecting interventions.
  • Implementing change and reviewing progress – implementation, reviewing and keeping the change on track. Sustaining change; making change permanent. Spreading the benefits of change.
