Overview of Assignment
Pharmacology is a field that is constantly changing – every year, new drugs are discovered and developed. This makes pharmacology an exciting area to work in, and also means that it’s important for you to develop the skills required to search for information about drugs (both new and existing), and to then communicate this information clearly and accurately. In this assignment, you will select a therapeutic drug that interests you, research the pharmacology of this drug (using authoritative sources), and write a structured essay about your chosen drug and its pharmacology.

Task

1. Choose the drug that you will discuss for your essay. You must choose a therapeutic drug – i.e. a drug that is used to treat a disease. Your drug could be one that is currently used, but you can also choose a drug that is no longer used clinically (e.g. because of safety issues) or a drug that is in the late stages of clinical development (i.e. a drug that is being trialled in the treatment of disease, but has not yet gone through the formal regulatory approvals process).
Spend some time thinking carefully about your choice of drug, and make sure that you consider the rest of these essay instructions and marking criteria when selecting your drug – this will save you time and energy in the long run. Make sure that you choose a drug that has:

A clear and well-characterised mechanism of action. You will need to describe this in detail in your essay, which will be much easier to achieve if the mechanism is well-characterised. An example of a poor choice of drug here would be paracetamol – whilst paracetamol is a very commonly used drug for its analgesic and antipyretic effects, its exact mechanism of action remains poorly characterised and unclear.

At least one adverse effect that is directly related to its mechanism of action, as you will also need to explain this in your essay. An example of an adverse effect that is directly related to the drug’s mechanism of action is the hypoglycaemia that can be caused by some anti-diabetic drugs that are used to reduce blood glucose levels.
