Assignment Task:

Task:

As part of a group, you will create a visually-engaging poster that puts one of the cognitive science concepts from this semester to the test! Each of your teammates will complete a pseudo-lab experiment by following one of the links below. Each group member must complete the same task and record their results, as your poster will compare the outcomes across team members.

Choose one as a group:
(1) Neural networks - A demo of the Hopfield network: http://caza.la/synaptic/#/self-organizing-map (Links to an external site.)(2) World representation - Mental rotation tasks: https://vample.com/tools/mental-rotation/ (Links to an external site.)(3) Perception - Choose any illusion: https://michaelbach.de/ot/ (Links to an external site.)(4) Attention - The Stroop Test: https://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/words.html (Links to an external site.)(5) Attention - Attentional blink: https://psych.hanover.edu/JavaTest/CLE/Cognition/Cognition/attentionalblink_instructions.html (Links to an external site.)
Each of your group members should agree on and have at least one attempt at the task you have selected. You may then discuss your quantitative (performance) and qualitative (experience) results with the task. Although the poster is not a formal lab report, you may format it with the following headings: Introduction / Task Overview, Methods of Completion, Results and Experiences, and Conclusion. Pretend that this a conference-format lab-report poster. (Of course it is a pseudo-experiment due to low same sizes and no controlled conditions!). This is not a formal research analysis/report, and assesses your understanding and application of the experience task chosen, not your research and data analysis skills, which can be based purely on descriptive or cross-tabs.

You may split the poster up into 4 components as per above. In your Introduction section, overview relevant literature related to the practical laboratory task (3-4 references). In the Method section, explain how your team members conducted the task and any issues that arose. In the Results section, tabulate your group member's results with the task and present any qualitative comments on your group's experience completing the task. Finally, in the Conclusion section, discuss your group's experience with the task. Conclude about whether it is a good measure of the cognitive faculty it intends to assess, with reference to the major problems we covered in week 1 (e.g., ecological validity, generalizability, etc.).

It is up to your group how you design the poster (ex: in horizonal/vertical format) and it can be developed in any software (I.e., Word or Publisher, for instance). As this is a group assessment, you will also need to read the Team Cooperation checklist, which acknowledges that the workload has been equally distributed, and each team member contributed. All group members receive the same grade provided that all members have read and acknowledge the team cooperation checklist. The checklist details and link are located below (just prior to the rubric).

A reference list can be included either in the footer or on a separate page and should be presented in APA (7th) format. The contents of the assignment does not need to adhere to any specific formatting or font requirements, but all references should be cited correctly in-text when used.

You can upload your poster as a PDF to Canvas. Only the group leader should upload the file, however all group member's names must be listed at the top of the poster (i.e., in the subtitle). The group leader must submit the group's Poster as a PDF to preserve typography and layout. You can do that in Word/Publisher/Power Point or most other apps by clicking on "Save As" or "Export to PDF". If you have any trouble, contact RMIT ITS and they will be able to assist you to convert it to PDF.

Criteria Ratings

  • Introduction and method (10pts) Exceeds expectations Equiv. HD/D 7-10pt
  • Group members have understood the purpose of the task, have clearly described how it is implemented and have documented how their team completed it in a scientific manner. Meets expectations Equiv. C/P 5-6pt
  • Understanding of the task and its purpose in cognitive science is mostly clear, and the team's application of the task is documented mostly well but may lack detail. Below expectations Equiv. N 0-4pt
  • The task or purpose may have been misunderstood or neglected in detail.
  • Results and Discussion (10pts) Exceeds expectations Equiv. HD/D 7-10pt
  • Group's results with the task have been documented clearly and have featured at least two comparative analyses. Reasonable conclusions are drawn from the results as well as implications of the task overall. Meets expectations Equiv. C/P 5-6pt
  • Results are mostly reported clearly but may lack some detail. Meaningful conclusions are drawn about the results and/or applicability of the task overall. Below expectations Equiv. N 0-4pt
  • Results and/or conclusion sections may lack detail required.
  • Reporting (10pts) Exceeds expectations Equiv. HD/D 7-10pt
  • All sections work well together in the poster and it is clear that the team members collaborated as a group on the overall design. The design and presentation is aesthetically pleasing and at a near-conference standard. Meets expectations Equiv. C/P 5-6pt
  • Sections are mostly integrated well. The theme of the poster is well-presented, but there may be minor design/written inconsistencies to review. Below expectations Equiv. N 0-4pt
  • Certain sections may be missing/incomplete or not relevant to the focus of the poster overall; design/expression may be inconsistent to the required format.
