ULO 2: Effectively communicate knowledge, information and opinion to inform and influence audiences

Description / Requirements

In this assignment you will assess two different career paths using the critical thinking tools and techniques from this unit. The assignment is divided into four stages. The first stage requires you to complete the career dashboard table (see page 4). The second stage requires you to critically identify the challenges and opportunities for one of those two career paths using tools from the unit.

The third stage (1000 words) requires you to create a speech / podcast to present your ideas about the challenges that face the industry you have chosen, and identify ways in which you will make a contribution to that industry within your career.   The final stage (1000 words) requires you to complete a critical reflection on of the speech, and identify the CT tools that were used in the speech and assess their value in developing a strong and convincing speech.

Broad criteria for marking (please see posted rubric for more details on the marking process):

1. Critical thinking used in the development of argument, explanation, inferences, examples, assumptions, and reflection – 10%
2. Problem solving – identification of key issues in the topic and defensible resolutions posited – 10%
3. Overall flow and presentation of the speech, reflection and transcript, style, use of evidence – 10%

Stage 1:  Career Dashboard

Complete the Career Dashboard table including any additional details. You will need to conduct in-depth research and investigation of aspirational careers for each role type.
Your degree is the starting point that leads to a variety of job roles, which can be categorised as:

Traditional or Obvious roles relate directly to a study area where the specialised discipline knowledge and skills are required.  Consider these are “Careers in” the discipline area, where the discipline specific knowledge you have developed in required for you to function fully within the role.

Related roles align to a specific study area. Because of this, some of the discipline specific knowledge gained through the degree will be required in the job, but the broader transferable skills, gained from various experiences, will be equally valued.

Open roles require a university degree from any study area, however the roles are not connected specifically to the discipline knowledge gained through the degree. These Open roles take advantage of the transferable generic skills developed through the curriculum of a university degree.

(Related and Open roles are considered as “Careers for” the discipline where the discipline specific knowledge you have developed can be used to inform the work you complete within your role)

Stage 2: Data Gathering – Your Industry

Choosing only 1 of the aspirational careers you have researched, identify 3 diverse bodies of opinion (ideally though not necessarily academic articles) which relate to the future challenges faced by, and opportunities that exist within, your chosen field of career specialization.  These opinions will then contribute to your own thoughts about your chosen industry which you will then incorporate into your speech.

Stage 3: Speech - Persuasive Oratory

Create a 1000 word speech about the future of your industry, and the contribution that you will be able to make given the challenges facing your industry.  In developing the speech use the principles of persuasive argument construction, the Critical Thinking Tools.
The speech is then to be delivered as a recording, accompanied by a written transcript of the speech.  Recording format can be either as a sound file (eg mp3) or as a video presentation using Kultura (Deakin Air) or Powerpoint.

Stage 4:  Critical Reflection
To complete the assignment, you will write a 1000 word reflection on the speech.  The reflection will evaluate the effectiveness of the speech in communicating your ideas.  It will also identify the use of the Critical Thinking tools that you have used, and their effectiveness in creating a strong and persuasive presentation.  The critical reflection on the speech should analyse its components,
