Executive Summary
This risk assessment is to identify the critical chemical hazards that could occur in the operations of the hospitality industry and the importance of implementing risk control to prevent or minimise the effects of chemical hazards in the hotel environment. In the hazard identification, chemical mishandling is believed to be the main cause of chemical hazards in the hospitality industry, the result of mishandling chemical substances is extremely toxic and dangerous for human health from minor injury such as nausea and skin irritant to severe injuries, permanent disability, and even death. Using the Semi-Quantitative Risk Assessment Matrix to determine the risk value of the hazards with severity level and likelihood level, the most critical hazard identified with the risk value of 12 which are mixing two highly reactive chemical substances such as bleach and hydrochloric and storing chemicals in unlabeled bottle and incorrect containers. Appropriate risk control for chemical hazards identified were hazard substitution, isolation and barriers, engineering controls, as well as administrative control and personal protective environment.
