Science and Mathematics Assessment Task

Question 1:

For each of the four statements below, indicate whether the statement is true or false, and provide your reasoning by identifying and applying one or more relevant physics concepts.

a. In a circuit, a battery acts as the source of the charge that will flow through the circuit.

b. To control current flow through a resistor, a switch must be wired in parallel with that resistor.

c. The greater the voltage applied across an ohmic resistor, the greater the current flow through the resistor.

d. When AC current flows in a circuit, energy is moved into the circuit during the positive half cycle and moved out of the circuit during the negative half cycle.

Question 2:

The inner workings of most electronic devices for diagnostic imaging are temperature-sensitive, in that they will not function properly if safe operating temperature is exceeded. However, these devices also include internal components that emit considerable heat within the device. Using concepts we have studied in Weeks 4 – 8:

a. Provide TWO specific strategies that an equipment designer could employ to reduce heating of the temperature-sensitive components and explain how physics concepts are applied in each strategy.

b. Explain why warranty for many devices will be voided if the equipment is operated in a room with air temperature exceeding the limit specified by the equipment manufacturer.

Question 3

Residual current devices and circuit breakers are two types of electrical safety devices that are normally included in all household circuits. For each of the two types of devices:

  • State the general circumstance that will cause the device to trigger

Provide an example of how that triggering general circumstance could have been caused (1 mark) • Explain the specific role of the device in electrical safety to the user of the circuit.

Question 4

An MRI machine produces a very strong static magnetic field at all times when powered on. Taking a steel gurney into the magnet room could be very dangerous, as illustrated in this YouTube video. Use concepts that we have studied in this unit to explain why the gurney accelerates from being stationary to crashing into the MRI machine.

Question 5

A physics student is sitting in a parked car just off a busy roadway. She measures the traffic noise and finds that shutting the car windows reduces the intensity of traffic sound to 1.0 % of what it would be with the car windows open. What reduction in intensity level (IL) is achieved by shutting the windows? In your response include an explanation of the underlying physics concept and follow the posted structured approach to problem solving in presenting your response.
