Aim of the project
Failures of artificial structures under extreme loading conditions can lead to mass destruction. To reduce the number of casualties, engineers should develop an understanding of the failure mechanisms and should be able to predict them. The stress triaxiality (the ratio between Mean Stress and Von Mises Stress: σm/σ?) is one of the most important parameters governing failure in metals. This project will make use of LS-DYNA (a 3D FEA code) to model published experiments and investigate the capability of the failure models available.
The objectives to be met in order to reach the aim of this project are:
2.1 Study the fracture characteristics using a minimum of three cases of triaxiality, one of them being a uniaxial stress test. This will be achieved by performing simulations to investigate the stress states in different cases. There will be extensive use of data from published experiments for accurate and feasible research. The tests will be carried out on 2024 Aluminium in the T3 temper. The target is to gather reliable published test data before the end of term 1.
2.2 Study the macro-mechanical models available from commercial codes to understand fracture parameters using LS-DYNA simulate published experiments and investigate the capability of the failure models. LS-DYNA is a 3D transient finite element code widely used for crash and impact analysis. The computational approach lays out the basic components of stress and strain tensors to aid the structural analysis by implementing reliable fracture criteria into codes. The simulative approach reduces the cost and time of conducting actual full-scale experiments. The end of term 1 and winter break will be utilised to learn the basic functions of LS-DYNA.
