Task 6.2 (A)
you have learnt about Intelligent transport systems (ITS) and connected autonomous vehicles (CAVS) and Research and Development in ITS and CAVS. Now it is time for you to think about your own research project in ITS and CAV. As a first step, in this task you will write an analysis of five research papers on a chosen topic in ITS and CAV, i.e., you conduct a literature review on a topic that you chose related to ITS and CAV. Note that a literature review typically includes many more papers, depending on the topic of review, and would aim to cover as much as possible. However, this exercise is designed to provide practice in analyzing a particular research topic, by looking at it from five different perspectives (i.e., as represented by the five papers). 


Instructions:
Which particular application topic within ITS and CAV was most interesting to you? Was it providing communication for autonomous vehicles, or data analytics in ITS or automated reasoning?
In this task, you are to choose a topic in ITS and CAV, find and read five research papers on the topic (most relevant papers).

 

Possible sources of research papers are these electronic databases:

  •  IEEExplore digital library
  •  Scholar.Google
  •  ACM Digital library

You could search for papers using particular keywords in the databases above, or in specific journals. Each field usually has particular journals or conference proceedings that are most relevant.

You need to search with suitable keywords, with as many keywords as possible at the start, and reducing depending on results; Use Deakin VPN from outside Deakin or access from within Deakin to get access to the above IEEE and ACM digital libraries.
For example, suppose your topic is " Technologies to enable communication for CAVs ", you could look for papers using vehicle to vehicle communication, vehicle to everything communication, or find other related papers on the topic, perhaps you may find papers referenced by the papers you read.

Write a title for your topic
Provide a complete list of references (as you would find in the references/bibliography section of a paper) by using IEEE referencing style.The reference list should include the five papers that you have chosen.
Based on the five papers you have chosen, write a mini literature review on your chosen application domain describing the work from the five papers as follows:

  •  an introduction to the application domain
  •  key concepts and ideas, obtained from the five papers
  •  summarize, contrast, and compare the research done across the five papers including

 

Experiments done (if any), results and limitations, advantages and disadvantages. This can also be presented as a table. You must note:

  •  Problems being addressed
  •  Approaches taken,
  •  Technologies used,
  •  Pros and cons,
  •  Outcomes,
  •  Similarities and differences in the content of five papers,
  •  Trace the development of ideas across the five papers. 


Task 7.1 (separate document)
You are now in the second step of developing your research proposal. In this step, you will identify the question, aim and objectives of the research proposal. This is a crucial step in your proposal. In Task 6.2, you have competed the analysis of five research papers that you have chosen in the research areas of ITS and CAV. You have now identified the research gaps that we need to address through the literature review you have completed in Task 6.2. In this task, you are to propose an idea or a concept that you come up with when you did your literature review in Task 6.2. In this task, you will

  •  Identify a novel research idea or concept that you could develop to address the R&D gaps you identified in the literature review
  •  Clarify the question that you are addressing
  •  Discuss the aim and objectives of your research proposal.

The idea or concept that you propose should also be accompanied by a mock-up (using diagrams) which will be the focus of Task 7.2 . 


Instructions

  • Provide your research question, which articulates the research problem you have identified and would like to investigate. You can refer to the literature review you have completed in Task 6.2.
  • Identify the aim of your research project. The aim of the project should be precise. The aim of the project is typically written in one sentence to state the purpose of the research project, i.e., what you expect to attain by conducting this research project.
  • State the objectives of the research project. Objectives state the major phases of your research proposal that you need to complete to realize the aim of the research project.

You can define the research objectives by following SMART guideline, i.e, objectives should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. 


Task 7.2 (separate document)
You have now reached the next step of your research proposal. So far, you have completed first two steps of your research proposal in Tasks 6.2 and 7.1, i.e., you set up the background by completing the literature review and you identified the research question, aim and objectives of the proposal. Now it is time to think about how you conduct the research project that you are proposing which is another crucial step in your proposal.
In this task, you will elaborate on the design and the timeline of your project. The idea or concept you propose should also be accompanied by a mock-up (using diagrams).
Submission Details A PDF document (750-800 words excluding the references ) Instructions :Prepare and submit a document (750 to 800 words excluding the references) that,

  • Describe and demonstrate your solution/idea/concept with the use of diagrams. This is the most important technical component of your proposal. You need to briefly discuss the methodology that you will utilize to conduct your research project, any specific techniques/ theories that you will use and reason behind your choice, any data that you may gather/use, and any specific resources/software/ equipment you may use.
  • Identify the advantages and limitation of your design/solution.
  • Devise a timeline for the project by assuming that you have been given 12 months to complete the project. Timeline should demonstrate that you are able to achieve the project objectives within a given period. You may use a table/ Gantt chart/or any other suitable form to explain the timeline of the project. 
  • Provide a summary of the expected outcome. This is the concluding statement of your project proposal where you need to highlight the impact of your research project.
  • Provide a complete list of references by using IEEE referencing style.
