Project Brief – Kurie Kurie
Kurie Kurie is a town located near Clarens, with a population of about 13,200. The town has become involved in a mural (wall painting) project known as the Towns with a Heart community programme. Three surrounding villages are also involved.
The project started in 2004 with five murals, each showing the area’s history, with the aim of attracting more visitors to these areas. Since 2004, over 50 murals have been developed and the project has had a large impact on the town. In the early stages, the murals attracted ad hoc busloads of elderly visitors who paid a minimum price (R5) for a guided tour of the murals. The project now charges a fee to all visitors for guided tours and meals and attracts regular bus tours throughout the year.
A huge impact of the project was that it created a unique identity for Kurie Kurie and the Towns with Heart programme. It made this small town stand out from the surrounding areas and created another product in the local tourism mix. This established an enormous pride in the community, as can be seen by the large number of volunteer guides who continue to work on the project. It also became an anchor for the Kurie Kurie Festival, which started in the same year as a flagship event. In 2011, 50 000 people visited the festival and murals, which is a huge achievement for a small town.
The Towns with Heart project was developed as part of the Community Economic Development Programme, funded by the Department of Culture and Economic Development. The programme was initiated in an effort to address the local level of unemployment and to facilitate local business growth and development, thereby creating sustainable employment.
The committee operates as an excellent example of co-operation amongst a range of community groups and has wide representation on its board from areas such as the council, business, health services, education, tidy towns committees, sport and recreation, youth, tourism, heritage and the community. A town co-ordinator was engaged to co-ordinate the implementation of the strategic plan and the projects identified by the local community at a number of community meetings.
