ASSESSMENT TASK: DESCRIPTION

Data literacy is an important skill for all JCU graduates, including those in the humanities, arts & social sciences. Data drives policy and program development; it is used (and sometimes abused) to shape public discourse; it can help us to evaluate cause & effect; it allows us to see patterns and general trends, and to identify anomalies. Knowing how to read data critically is vital for meaningful engagement in society. Moreover, being comfortable using spreadsheets to make sense of data is a key skill sought by employers (and it can be useful outside of work contexts, too).

For this assessment, you will be provided with a set of data from the Australian Census. Using Microsoft Excel, you will get to practice some basic data manipulation (ie sorting and rearranging it, presenting it graphically) and answer questions about what the dataset tells us.

Full instructions for how to complete each task required of you will be provided — in other words, you do not need to already be familiar with spreadsheets in order to succeed. This assessment is designed to help students feel comfortable understanding data, ensure students know how to do some basic Excel functions, and consider how quantitative data is relevant to the disciplines in the arts and social sciences.
