Kevin Houston (2009) emphasises the importance (apart from the correct use of mathematics) of using sentences of good English to explain what you are calculating when completing mathematical assessment. Here is a quote from his book:
A common response when I indicate a nonsensical statement in a student’s work is ‘But you are a lecturer, you know what I meant’. I have sympathy with this view too, but there are two problems with it.
(i) If the reader has to use their intelligence to work out what was intended, then the student is getting marks because of the reader’s intelligence, not their own intelligence.
(ii) The second point is perhaps the most important for students. Sorting through a jumble of symbols and half-baked poorly expressed ideas is likely to frustrate and annoy any assessor – not a good recipe for obtaining good marks. (Houston 2009, Ch. 3, p.3)

Examples of common presentation mistakes:

Example 1
Student’s answer to an assignment question
(a) (94 students ÷ 10) ×8 = 75.2 round down to 75 students
75 students are expected to finish the course.
(b) 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75 0.75 × 84% = 63 students
63 of the 75 students are expected to pass the examination
What is incorrect about this? The maths looks OK (except in part (b)), and we can gather that the question is asking something about students (good concluding statements) but it would be far better to state what is happening to give full context. So here is the question and a clearer answer.

Question: In a certain tertiary course, eight out of every 10 students that start the course finish it.
(a) If in this semester 94 students enrol in the course, how many are expected to finish?
(b) If the pass rate (for those completing the course) is 84%, how many of those sitting for the examination at the end of this semester should pass?

Clearer answer:
(a) 94 students enrol in a course where 8 out of 10 complete it. The number that are expected to finish is:

810 of 94 =8 10 × 94 = 75.2

As you can’t have part people, I have rounded to the nearest person. Therefore, 75 students are expected to finish the course.
(b) The pass rate is 84%. To find the number of students that will pass this course out of the 75 that complete it:
84% of 75 = 84 100 × 75 = 63 students (note that the student’s answer of 0.75×83% would give an incorrect calculation of 0.63). 63 of the 75 students are expected to pass the examination.
Example 2
Question: Make y the subject of the following: x = -2y + 5 + 6y
Student’s answer: (problem sections are highlighted in red)

What is incorrect?
First error: Although -2y + 6y does equal 4y, this statement interferes with the flow of the solution (it is really an “on the side” calculation).
Second error: Although the concept of subtracting 5 from both sides of the equation is implied, the 5’s should be placed within the equation.
Clearer answer:
2 5 6
4 5 This indicates that you know that - 2 6 4
5 4 5 5
5 4 You could skip line 3 and go straight to this li

Example 3
Question: Find the gradient and the y-intercept of the following equation: 3y-x = 9
