Gender and Education

Education is a process which can directly or indirectly provide the abilities needed by women to question existing gender inequalities and the causes of injustice. Education can ameliorate unequal conditions by changing the subordinated position of women in developing countries and altering their marginal role in society. Importantly, the idea that attainment of educational qualifications by women will pave a road to participating in decision-making and overcoming structural inequality (an argument for secondary and tertiary expansion and qualifications, particularly with lower women’s enrolment rates in these systems). This can arguably contribute to the creation of civil society and political participation, two key steps in reducing poverty.
