Assignment Task

Task

This assessment task requires you to conduct an experiment and write a report based on your experiment to demonstrate how the body responds when its homeostatic balance is challenged during exercise. You will draw on your knowledge and understanding of chemistry (e.g. chemical reactions & buffers) and biology (e.g. homeostasis, nervous system, respiratory system). You will refer to a minimum of four scholarly sources (i.e. journal articles and/or textbooks) to help you explain why respiration rate increases during exercise.

Q. What structure should I use for the report?

Abstract:

The abstract provides the reader with a succinct overview of the whole report. The abstract generally contains at least one summarising sentence from each of the sections of the Introduction to Science for Health Professions report. It provides a concise summary and overview of the report content. It consists of only one paragraph. This one paragraph should be able to stand alone. The abstract is generally written after you have finished writing the rest of the report to ensure that it gives the reader a succinct overview of the complete report. Even though it is written last, the abstract is placed at the beginning of the report.

Introduction:

The Introduction section sets the scene for the reader. It contains relevant background information regarding the key topics/concepts (including definitions and/or explanations) to help the reader understand what the report is about. This section should describe homeostasis and explain how the human body maintain homeostasis, with the focus on the respiratory system. Consider using a relevant example to help you explain what homeostasis is and how it works in the human body. Remember to reference throughout the Introduction. Clearly state your hypothesis at the end of this section.

Discussion:

A discussion analyses and interprets the results, explaining the findings of the experiment while referring to the relevant literature. This section of the report discusses your results, telling the reader what they actually mean in terms of homeostasis. In the Discussion section, you need to explain why respiration rate increases during exercise. You will draw on your knowledge and understanding of chemistry (e.g. chemical reactions & buffers) and biology (e.g. homeostasis, nervous system, respiratory system). Explain how the results of your experiment illustrate homeostasis in the participant. Remember to use the relevant literature to help explain your findings and to support your claims. Do not include any personal opinions.

Conclusion:

The conclusion section sums up your key findings (i.e. the main take home message) for the entire report. In this section, you state succinctly what your experiment allows you to conclude about homeostasis. You need to relate it back to your hypothesis (stated in the Introduction section).
