Folk music 
The terms Folk music or Folk songs cannot be separately defined. Folk music or Folk songs are the songs which had its origin among the people of a country or area. It is transmitted orally by one singer or generation to the other singers of next generation. Earlier folk music or songs exists only in the oral forms but later it also becomes the form which had its own record. It is a traditional art form often existing in several versions, and marked generally by simple, modal melody and stanzaic, narrative verse.
Indian Folk Music
India is known for its unity in diversity and multiculturalism. India has a great tradition of different Art forms especially Dance, Painting and Music. Indian music exists in different forms as per its culture. Folk music also contains very vital part of Indian society. Different states and traditions contribute to different forms of folk music. It reflects the life of Indian people particularly about farming, different professions, events, seasons etc.  It also serves as a means to entertain and to break the monotony of routine life among them.
Folk music and its references can be found in the Vedic literature near about 1500 B.C. According to some scholars folk music can be as old as the history of native Indian people. Pandavani, the popular folk art of Central India can be traced its relations with the great Epic Mahabharata. 
Original purpose behind the Folk music throughout the India remains the same but it differs in its style, the use of musical instruments, the way it is worshipped by the people in different cultures.  Folk songs had its traditions. Great poets like Rabindranath Tagore composed folk songs and this tradition becomes Ravindra Sangeet. Folk songs were also used by the religious leaders to spread religious preaching among the people. People imitated it and later it becomes identity of those villages and it becomes the tradition of those people. One of the important features of Indian folk music is that it combines with dance form. Singing, dancing and performing goes simultaneously in some of the Folk music forms. Nearly all the states in our country or the regions have their own folk music.
Regional varieties of Indian Folk Music. 
Bihugeet
Bihugeet is a form of folk music which is performed during the celebration of Bihu festival in Assam. This is also famous in some of the North-East part of India. Generally it is accompanied with dance performance. There are different themes of the stories conveyed in Bihugeet like love, nature or narration of some humorous incidents with social messages.  
Lavani 
Lavani is a very famous folk art of Maharashtra. Its primary concern is to entertain the people especially soldiers. But it also comments on the social issues and politics. There are two types of Lavani. Shringari, which is sensual and erotic in its subject, while Nirguni, philosophical in its content. This is performed by the leading woman accompanying by other male musicians and female dancers. 
Pandavani 
As the name indicates, this form presents the heroic deeds of the characters of The Epic Mahabharata. This is a popular form of music which is performed in Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Andhra Pradesh. Tabla, Dholak, Harmonium, Manjira and Tambura are the musical instruments used. Tambura is also used as props to show different characters in Mahabharata.   
Uttarakhandi Music
This is a folk music form performed in Uttarakhand during the festivals or religious events.
Primary subject matters of these songs are nature, bravery of characters, religious and cultural practices of the society. Dholki, Dhol, Bhankora, Harmonium and Tabla are used as musical instruments.

Rabindra Sangeet
These are the group of folk songs written by the great Indian poet Ravindranath Tagore. These songs are performed in different rituals and festivals of West Bengal. It covers various subjects like worshiping God and Nature, love, patriotism, lyrical plays and other subjects. Harmonium, Sitar, Piano, Sarod, Flute, Ektara, and Tabla are the musical instrument used. 
Music of the Bauls
It is a folk music form of Bengal. It is a group of a musician called Bauls who traveled from place to place singing songs and searching for the truth of life. These songs are religious in the subject. Common musical instruments used are Ektara, Khamak and Dotara.

Bhatiali
This is ancient Bengali folk music sung by the fishermen. These fishermen used to sing for entertainment while rowing their boats.
Bhavgeet
It is the folk music of expression sung in Karnataka ad Maharashtra. It is intense in expressing feelings of nature, love, philosophy.
There are other folk music forms like Hafiz Nagma, Surma, Ladishah, Chakri in Jammu and Kashmir. Jhoori, Ainchaliyan in Himachal Pradesh. Rasiya, Birha, Kajari, Qawwali in Uttar Pradesh. Punjabi Tappa, Bhangra, Jugni. Uttarakhand’s Jhoda, Thadya. Ja-Jin-Ja, Baryi, Nyioga of Arunachal Pradesh. Rajasthani Maand, Pabuji Ki Phach, Panihari. Bihari Sohar, Sumangali. Jharkhand’s Domkach, Jhumar. Gujarati Bhajan, Garba, Dandiya etc.

Indian folk music and its modern fusion form  
In the process of globalization, Contemporary India is undergoing the process of change. Cultures get fused with different tastes of other cultures. Arts get influenced by other art forms.  With the passage of time, the contemporary taste of Indian music gets experimented. Especially Indian folk music in its fusion form attracted many people. Its fusion with western Rock, Jazz, or pure classical Indian music, makes it more popular within youngsters. There is a new form of music called as modern folk music which tries to revive the traditional folk music. It presents a kind of new flavor to Indian music. This can be seen as an attempt to keep alive the dying folk music in different forms. 

There are some efforts made by the Indian musicians and their bands to revive the folk music in India. These bands are slowly showing their popularity not only in India but throughout the world. These musicians combine the elements of Folk music with the other western and Indian styles of music 


The Raghu Dixit Project 
The Raghu Dixit Project is a multilingual folk band it uses traditional Indian sounds with western influence. Taking ancient Kannada poetry, and presenting it around the world with a contemporary, global sound. He uses Kannada, Hindi, Tamil languages and sings in the vernacular tongue. He represents today’s India which is ethnic at its core but global in its outlook.
Tetseo Sisters: Mercy,  Azi, Kuku and Lulu 
Tetseo Sisters is a group of four sisters from Nagaland. It brings a vibrant culture and folk music of their land. They use the Chokri dialect of Chakhesang Naga tribe, one of the major Naga tribes. They sing Li, the traditional songs of the Nagaland region.
Maati Baani
It is a group of music artists Nirali Kartik and Kartik Shah with other folk artists. They search folk musicians from interior villages of India, making this artist part of their group for live performance. They give diverse linguistic experiences by using Hindi, Gujarati, Sindhi and Rajasthani languages in their songs.   
Papon & the East India Company 
The band consists of Papon, Brin Desai, Hameem Kader, Jinti, Kirti, Dipu, and Tanmay.  These members are from different backgrounds like Assamese folk,  metal and blues to trip-hop. They intermingle East Indian folk singing with western instruments like electronics guitars, percussion, bass, and drums. They have reinvented different folk songs "Baisara Beera",  a Rajasthani folk song, "Dinae Dinae", is a beautiful Bhatiali river song from Goalpara in Assam, and "Jhumor", a rousing song of the tea tribes in Assam. 
Swarathma
This is a Bangalore based folk-rock music band that blends different Indian folk styles with western styles like Jazz, Rock, Blues, and Reggae. They re-versioned Rabindranath Tagore's iconic song, Ekla Chalo Re. Another important aspect of this band is its awareness of a social and political message.
Indian Ocean
The Indian Ocean is an Indian rock band considered as pioneers of the fusion rock genre in India. Their musical style is experimental in nature and can be described as folk and fusion music. The mix traditional Indian tunes with rock music and integrates shlokas, Sufism, environmentalism, mythology, and revolution.  
Kailasa
Kailasa's named on the singer Kailas Kher. Their music is a blending of ancient Indian music, Sufi and Western music. Another important aspect of his singing is that he sings as if a female devotee or lover is trying to influence her God or lover like ancient Rajasthani poet Meerabai.
