Assignment Task

Task

  • Provide a screenshot of two rectified Landsat images in standard FCC; use the Images you downloaded from assignment 1 (May-September with no snow and minimum cloud cover).
  • Provide a visual interpretation of the quality of the rectified images.
  • Submit a screenshot of your selected GCPs (x20) overlaid on the reference QuickBird image (located in your medusa folder) for each of your Landsat images.
  • Submit a screenshot of the two link tables for your two Landsat images. Specify the coordinates of the GCPs in the original layer and the coordinates of the reference layer and include the RMS for each point and the total RMS for the 20 points. Your total RMS should be less than 15m.
  • Based on your experiment, elaborate on why it is necessary to implement image registration before change detection and why the road intersections are the most suitable GCPs?

Task

  • Submit a jpeg of the two supervised classification maps (with all map elements)
  • Submit a jpeg of the change map in grayscale (typically white color for change and black color for no-change areas).
  • Of the assigned five classes (i.e., Water, Vegetation, Urban, Residential, and Bare Soil), which class indicates the most change during this period? What class does it change to?
  • What are some practical applications of change detection in the real world? Provide a well-thought-out example of a situation where change detection could provide useful information.
  • There are multiple methods of conducting change detection. Conduct an internet search, and provide the name and a brief description of one other method.

LAND USE LAND COVER ANALYSIS

  • In this section, you will extract a land cover type of choice and manipulate it. Choose ONE of the classified images you created in the previous section and follow the steps provided in Appendix 3.
  • Convert your classified raster to a vector file and create a shapefile with each land cover class as a single polygon.
  • After creating individual shapefiles for each land cover class, display them all within ArcMap and assign each class a new colour/pattern of your choice using the Symbol Selector window (be creative and experiment with some of the patterns).

LAND USE LAND COVER ANALYSIS

Zoom to the layer of “mississauga_QuickBird_2013_06_13.TIF”. In the table of contents, uncheck the layer of the Landsat image. From the Georeferencing toolbar, click the Image Viewer button. In the Image Viewer window, click the Reposition button  (The Reposition button will resize your data view and the Image Viewer window, displaying them side by side.)

The image on the left shows the reference QuickBird image. The viewer on the right shows the unregistered Landsat image. You will use the image on the left to correct the one on the right by choosing points and adjusting the matching point to the QuickBird image.

From the Georeferencing menu, uncheck Auto Adjust. Identify a good location (i.e., road intersection) to place a control point on the image (this will be your first ground control point – GCP). In both windows, zoom to the location you identified. On the Georeferencing toolbar, click the Add Control Points button. Then, in the Image Viewer window (right window), click your selected location to add a control point. You will notice the matching GCP is added in the main window (left window), but there is an obvious offset (i.e., it doesn’t match the location in the image viewer window – this is because the Landsat image isn’t perfectly registered yet).
