Artifact
What is your chosen artifact? Include a link to or a picture of the artifact. My artifact is the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
The whole Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial consist of 3 sculptures. The Stone of Hope sculpture is made of shrimp colored granite blocks when assembled it is 30-feet high. The Stone of Hope is Dr. King carved out down to his knees. He is standing with his arms folded staring and he is staring out into the sky. The 2 Mountains of Despair are also made of the same shrimp colored granite. The sculptures have inscriptions of Dr. Kings sermons and speeches on them. There is also a 450-ft inscription wall that surrounds the sculptures. |
The elements of the artifact that I believe are most important to how you experience are the inscriptions of quotes. The name “Stone of Hope” was taken from Dr. Kings I Have a Dream speech. “Out of the mountains of despair, a stone of hope,” is inscribed on the side of the sculpture and knowing the history behind them. The choice of the medium does not impact me experience.

Assumptions about your artifact
The purpose of the artifact was to show honor and respect to Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. he was a Baptist Minister, social activist, a civil rights leader, minister, and Nobel Peace Prize winner in the 50s and 60s. I believe the creator achieved his purpose of creating the artifact. One significant symbol of the sculpture was Dr. Kings legs were incomplete. It was said to be done on purpose because Dr. Kings work was not done. There’s still a lot of work to be done for equality.
This artifact reflects on history and represents the man who wanted equal rights for African Americans. The Stone of Hope reflects Dr. Kings vision of one day African Americans being equal.
The Stone Of Hopes address is 1964 Independence Ave. Which was the year the Civil Rights Act Of 1964 became law. The sculpture was placed next to the Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Memorials to make the connection between all three important moments in civil rights in nations history.

Question 1: Was the result of the sculpture what he first envisioned?
