Artifact

What is your chosen artifact? Include a link to or a picture of the artifact. My artifact is the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

 Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

  1. Describe the artifact

in detail. For instance, how would you describe it to someone who could not see it?

The whole Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial consist of 3 sculptures. The Stone of Hope sculpture is made of shrimp colored granite blocks when assembled it is 30-feet high. The Stone of Hope is Dr. King carved out down to his knees. He is standing with his arms folded staring and he is staring out into the sky. The 2 Mountains of Despair are also made of the same shrimp colored granite.  The sculptures have inscriptions of Dr. Kings sermons and speeches on them. There is also a 450-ft inscription wall that surrounds the sculptures.

  1. Choose elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how you experience it and explain why. For instance, what particularly catches your senses or makes you want to keep experiencing it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience?

The elements of the artifact that I believe are most important to how you experience are the inscriptions of quotes. The name “Stone of Hope” was taken from Dr. Kings I Have a Dream speech. “Out of the mountains of despair, a stone of hope,” is inscribed on the side of the sculpture and knowing the history behind them. The choice of the medium does not impact me experience.

Assumptions about your artifact

  1. State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of the creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what message do you believe the creator is trying to express, and is that message successfully expressed?

The purpose of the artifact was to show honor and respect to Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. he was a Baptist Minister, social activist, a civil rights leader, minister, and Nobel Peace Prize winner in the 50s and 60s.  I believe the creator achieved his purpose of creating the artifact. One significant symbol of the sculpture was Dr. Kings legs were incomplete. It was said to be done on purpose because Dr. Kings work was not done. There’s still a lot of work to be done for equality.

  1. Discuss how the artifact reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure to address what aspects of culture have relevance for this artifact: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the artifact and its culture interrelate? For instance, how would a particular form of body modification reflect the urban culture in which you encountered it?

This artifact reflects on history and represents the man who wanted equal rights for African Americans. The Stone of Hope reflects Dr. Kings vision of one day African Americans being equal.

  1. Use the artifact to discuss how acts of creative expression impact and are impacted by the people and situations that surround it. How might the artifact and the person who created it have impacted each other? For instance, how might the geographic location where the artifact was made, the materials used to create the artifact, the medium of the creative process, or the environment where the artifact is displayed influence the creator’s life or future creative work? How might the artifact and the culture or context in which it was created have impacted each other? For instance, does the artifact add to the understanding of the culture from which it was created? What contributions does it make to continuing on a dialogue about that culture and the importance of its artifacts?

The Stone Of Hopes address is 1964 Independence Ave. Which was

the year the Civil Rights Act Of 1964 became law. The sculpture was placed next to the Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Memorials to make the connection between all three important moments in civil rights in nations history.

  1. Questions: Pose questions

you have after thinking deeply about this artifact. What more do you want to know regarding:

  1. The relationship between human culture and expression

  2.

Question 1:

Did the creator Lei Yixin go through any racial injustices during the process of creating the sculpture?

Question 2: If you were building the sculpture in 2020, would you make it the same?

  1. Your personal assumptions about artifacts of this sort and why they exist

  2.

Question 1: Why are there no female monuments?

Question 2: What do you think monuments of the future will look like?

C.

How your values have shaped and are shaped by your expression and that of others

Question 1: How might having lived during the 50s and 60s shaped your values and expression vs now in 2020?

Question 2:  If the creator had been African American would that shape your value towards the sculpture?

  1. The relationship between the possible intent of the creator and your own interpretation of its meaning

  2.

Question 1:

Was the result of the sculpture what he first envisioned?

Question 2: Was it a life goal of the creators to build this monument or did he not consider doing it until the opportunity presented itself?

  1. Speculate on how you would go about answering these questions. For instance, what sorts of things would you study about these kinds of artifacts and their contexts that might begin addressing these questions?

I would do research on the sculpture, the creator, the person the sculpture represents. The time in history he was a live.
